Hi. Im Adia. I’m from SC. Currently living in Brooklyn. I am the atypical Brooklyn hipster. When I’m not plugged into my Ipod awaiting the elusive L train I’m posing on Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg rocking my skinny black jeans and headscarf…or I’m posing in the East Village in a vintage dress and riding boots. That’s just how we throw down in New York City. Oh there’s also Union Square. I like to stand there and look really cool while imagining Bob Dylan strumming his guitar in park where incense and melon selling merchants now reside.

I sit on the 1 train, thumbing my way through a newspaper I found discarded on the seat next to me. The rocking of the train is almost hypnotic. I feel my eyelids itching to close, my head rolls to my shoulder lethargically. Where am I going? I'll get off at the next stop, whatever it may be. There has to be more to New York than what I've experienced so far; the warm nostalgic roti shack on Washington avenue in Brooklyn, the seemingly endless train ride to the upper west side, meandering thr...

Poetry / My Way Home

I'm on my way home I vow solemnly to the space around me As I comb past the calamity I've cultivated into routine It doesn't make sense Dollars, either A hand in my pocket is met by lint And spent receipts crumpled as if to supress My buyer's remorse It wasn't cheap, but sure had its thrills But at the end of the day Regret, it kills There is no solace Where hunger is hunted for sport Profit made from pain I'm on my way home Past tangled bushes of fibs and promises That pull at my heels Rende...

"Lay me down" I ask, shifting my weight in your arms I dont want to burden you But I would keep my fingers interlaced behind your neck forever if I could You reassure me that Im light as a feather But I feel my weight like a barrel of bricks in your tired arms How many times have I crawled to you To have you lift me up from the filthy floor And hold me so close that I see myself in your eyes Lay me down In a bed you prepared for me My body is broken, but my spirit still soars When I lie in yo...

Table We sit at the table Six beasts With appetites that rival The size of the open country sky Some devour, others nibble I hold crumbs to my mouth Timidly with one hand The other is steady around a glass To wash down the parching struggle Of what I fight against Five others take to the meal fervently Clutching bones They relish each tug of the flesh But I find that my meal consists of Dry, stale bread Tossed aside in a frenzy by the others Who exact in prey But I won't complain Not while my...

Can I just be extremely dense and admit that I thought you were commenting on Imperialism of some sort, only to have finish the poem and see "Damn Gophers" That just makes the poem that much better! My favorite line was "Fences become ladders to crawl over." The image that that brought to mind was genius. Loved the poem!
Poetry / Special?
Wow. You may as well have just written the first three versus of this poem about me! I had an experience with a young man this past spring that instantly came to my mind when I read this. There was a strong attraction between that wasnt allowed as he is was one of my bosses, and we never really verbally aknowledged our feelings for one another but the intensity was still there. We've since then fallen out of contact, but you have eloquently put into words what I, for the past 4 months, have n...
Lyrics / Our Song
Wow. That was beautiful. I'm usually not a fan of love related poems, but this one has so many facets, it could pertain to any type of relationship, not only a romantic one. I love the usage of music to define your feels. Extremely original. Beautifully written!
Short Story / Flight of The Eagle
I loved your story. And let my just add I have no previous knowledge/ appreciation for golf, but I was still able to enjoy your work. Your writing is done with a very tasteful wink. I liked how your character would dramatize his surroundings, only to come to terms to how others described it (and what it actually was) Very nice. I can always go for a chuckle. Well done!
Poetry / The Pack
Beautifully written. I recently moved to New York City and for some reason I have been using the proverbial wolf a lot in my writing as well. I loved the second phrase! It was extremely profound as I have often found myself feeling like a sheep walking around the city. I loved the way you interpreted the city. From the 'bridges spanning across the water' to 'the burial grounds of the foolish.' So interesting to have a writer even mention graveyards in a poem about New York, because one often ...
