I haven't been able to write recently so I am writing about writing instead, trying to rekindle the fire that makes poetry so exciting and enticing for me. I see all kinds of poetry all over the internet--much of it vapid and cardboard-y; like bad, formulaic renditions of the great inspirational poems. The question I always ask myself is: Why? Why bother writing a poem if you aren't going to use it to say something new and shocking? Why spend your time digging in caves that have already been ...

A breath begins the journey— whose lips gave it life? The boundaries of bodies are disappearing. Inside me a song is sung silently: at once an affirmation of the beauty of this corporal bond, and a sonorous keening for the self to whom I have died to allow myself this chance for union.

I am the eternal hidden diamond. Can’t shine in my shell of a thousand rocks. Crack the surface, reach deep within my pain Agony bears quaint magic healing too. You who will lay bare my gray chrysalis, Take me, don’t be scared to let me take you.

Christmas is coming: season of joy, love compassion, season of gifting-- anyone who has ever had a TV or stereo stand flooded by vacuous Hallmark decorations, dashed off in the mail by acquaintances long forgotten along the dusty gnarled ribbon of years can tell you that. A shining, sprightly woman strolls down a sidewalk in city center, one hand held by a handsomely suited man and the other cradling a breathing bundle of blankets. She is beaming as though the hand of hardship had never caugh...

Don’t listen to what I say. My voice will not guide you to anything worth knowing. The wind is my mother tongue, words like gusts of air whisking through the river channel turning the waves as they please, making you wonder which way the current really flows.

I love the line "absolution is still haunting me". I was confused at first as to what it meant, but I like that its cryptic nature leaves it open for the reader to find his or her own meaning in it. I think the way this poem is laid out is very effective - the middle section brings images of angels and bodhisattvas, freedom and flying, but these images are 'smothered' in the midst of sensations of being trapped, forced, compartmentalized. "Particles of psychotic dreams" captures the sense of ...
Wonderful imagery in this poem--your word choices and vivid descriptions really make it come alive. I think the thing I love most is that on the surface it appears to be a poem about the physical activity of swimming, but a closer look at the title gives it a whole new dimension. One thing that didn't quite work in my mind was the muscles that "ache and groan from lack of use". Why lack of use? It doesn't seem to make sense after the "frantic splashes" and "rocket-like expulsion of calories"....
I love reading things written from a child's point of view. The simple, earnest tone of the piece beautifully expresses a child's confused disappointment at a parent's anger. A heartrending story that reveals how the young brain shapes our perception of ourselves.
Great article. What the world needs is more people who do what they love and do it passionately, rather than people who squash their inborn talents to do something more "practical". The internet is a godsend for the artistically inclined, and you are a perfect example of someone who has made the most of the opportunities it presents. I hope others who read this article are inspired and empowered by your tale of an "ordinary" person using your art and your motivation to make a successful livin...
I loved reading this piece...it's fun, it's random, it's cynical, your answer to question 5 is absolutely amazing, and you've nicely expressed eight of the most mystifying questions of all time (if you ever learn the answer to the last one please let me know!) Beautiful!
