I’m a Midwestern freelance writer with a slew of strange, disparate interests. I’ve written on everything from the physics of radiation to iron foundry operations to WWII fighter aces. I’m a crackerjack shot with pistol or rifle, I play guitar like Slowhand himself, and I can grill a steak better than any man alive. I’m also lazy, shiftless, disheveled, and prone to forgetting to take out the trash. Take me as I am, or not at all.

It was a rare occasion, and an exciting one, that the bespectacled accountants of the Financial Crimes Unit could host a briefing for the burly operators of the Hostage Rescue Team. The two groups had little in common, so the breaking-of-the-ice was a worry. Financial Crimes opted to go with a cheery intro screen to their PowerPoint presentation, which was already projected onto the briefing-room wall as Hostage Rescue mumbled their hellos and good-mornings, and filed in: Financial Crimes We...

Act 1, Scene 1 (inside Tracey’s apartment) DONNIE (entering) Hello? Trace? You home? TRACEY (from offstage) Hi! I’m in here. Be just a sec. (enters) Hey babe! How’d it go? DONNIE It’s good, it looks good. So far so far. Have you seen one yet? TRACEY No, I haven’t had the TV on. Julie did, though. She says hi. DONNIE Well then did you ask her? Did you ask her the stuff I – TRACEY (overlapping, with laugh) Yes, yes…she says yes, it looked just like something from a university research thing, j...

It started with a lie. It was a white lie, a necessary lie. That’s what Jamison called it, and as its author he should know. He had the best of intentions, no one could deny that. He certainly couldn’t have foreseen what was to happen. But as I lay here, looking for someone to blame – other than the mob, other than myself – I can’t help thinking about Jamison, and his lie, and his goddamned good intentions. It was a TV commercial, written and paid for by Jamison. The voice-over was his. The ...

The reporter was frisked and scanned, then admitted into an oaken library the size of a soccer stadium. This was at the end of a ten minute walk through the foyer and the drawing room and God knows how many other rooms. That, after a twenty minute drive up something too grand to be called a driveway, and that after a ninety minute drive through some of the most secluded Connecticut countryside that money could buy. A servant, who somehow looked incongruous because he wasn't in livery, conduc...

Lucien Justulus Trajar, captain of the Praetorian Guard, trotted his horse at a slow, deliberative gait – one that implied purpose, if not hurry. He was on the Via Appia, a half-day’s ride out of Rome, and at this pace he was still another day from his destination of Asculum, along the eastern Latin seacoast. He was grateful for the travel time, as it afforded him opportunity to ponder this task his emperor had assigned him. The previous night, he’d been summoned to the emperor’s private apa...

Children's / Down, Down They Come
This is wonderful - a really good start to what can turn into an enchanting story. Not every writer has that special something in them that makes them a childrens author. I certainly do not. But I'd say that you do. I hope you keep working at it, building your skills, and then start working toward getting published. The kids of the world would love for you to do so. As for this piece - you need to finish it for starters, as I'm sure you're aware. I suspect you know exactly where the story is ...
Quotes / I Pissed God Off
This is the first 'quote' I've reviewed, so I'm not exactly sure how to approach this. As a one-liner...it works. So in that respect, I suppose you've done your work. But...I'm left wanting more. HOW did you piss God off? What's your punishment? You woke up today - is that the punishment, or the cause for the punishment? You've succeeded in intriguing me. Don't leave me hanging.
Sci Fi & Fantasy / Fear
Ooh, good stuff. One of my favorite thing about vampire stories is what each author adds to the mythos - the little changes that every writer makes. One question that arises in each story is 'how did the vamp become a vamp?' You've offered a nice scenario as to how the vampire Damion (at least that's what I presume he's to become) gets that way. Vengeful goddess is an excellent touch. I assume she'll be back? The only critiques I could offer would be of the purely mechanical sort. Such as, "I...
Sci Fi & Fantasy / Hidden
It's not easy to critique this, since it is as you say a character study. The few shortcomings I'd note will presumably be ironed out when you get around to writing the longer piece. (For the record, those shortcomings would be - I couldn't tell much about the characters, and I'm puzzling over what, exactly, an adept is). So instead I'll mention the positives: excellent use of second person - which is, as you suggest, not an easy format. Also, a remarkable ability to suggest quite a few of th...
Sci Fi & Fantasy / Predetermination
I guess you'll have to take my word for it that I'm not seeking your work out...I'm just coming across it randomly and anonymously. (indeed, as I'm writing this I still haven't seen the author's name...but I KNOW who it is, as her style is quite distinct). At any rate - this is the second character study I've read from you and again I'm impressed. I've never tried this approach with character development...and you've got me wondering if I should start. Once again you've revealed a lot about t...
