Short Story / Memoirs of a Player

Sunday meant another interminable business flight between San Antonio and Atlanta. In those management consultant days, I was returning to my client for the fifth week of an eight week engagement. At thirty two years old I stood 5’11” tall, with curly light brown hair, a solid body, and an eight inch steed o’ steel straining beneath my Jockeys, if you catch my subtlety. Okay, that may be a slight exaggeration – my hair wasn’t all that curly. Anyway, my seat was in coach on the bulkhead aisle ...

Short Story / The House Dick
Version 1

It was late September and I was in the fifth week of a sweet lay as house dick for a Catholic middle school in a small burg in northwest Pennsylvania. I retired the year before from the town’s paper mill where I had worked for 40 years, most recently as a master hydro-pulper. After putting in my papers, I took a correspondence course to fulfill a lifelong dream of becoming a private dick. I didn’t yet have my ticket but this lay didn’t require it, so when I read about the opening in the local...

Each Wednesday during the school year the El Dorado Park Irregulars met for breakfast at Jim’s, a local San Antonio coffee shop and eatery. The Irregulars, or EDI as they preferred to call themselves, were primarily stay at home mothers and unemployed wives who, after packing off children and husbands for the day, gathered for a mid-week breakfast outing. Essentially an ad hoc gathering, the EDI did have a regular core membership that included Sara Perez, Jill Patterson, Helen Trauber, and me...

Short Story / Mr. Delmar pays a visit
I like this tale although it appears to be more of a memoir or essay rather than a short story. If you want to make it a short story, watch your POV. The piece is written in first person but the POV seems to shift. The narrator seems to know and experience things that happen to others. How does he know what happened at 2:00 AM in his parents' room? (We later assume the narrator is relating the story his father told him but we don't know that here.) Things like "My uncle wanted my father to go...

Sci Fi & Fantasy / Why Did You Find Me
There are several grammatical and spelling errors which is understandable for a first draft but should be avoided whenever possible. This is very short for a first chapter, especially in a fantasy piece. We want to get to know the protagonist a bit more. What is her name? What does she look like? Who are "they" in the second sentence? What did the manor look like...smell like...sound like? You have a nice start but this will need to be fleshed out quite a bit. We need some sense that the worl...
Journal, Diary, & Blogging / Cats
Nice piece, I share your obvious love of cats. The first two thirds of the piece are tight. You have a paragraph about play habits, one about interaction with other humans, one about his morning routine, and so on. However towards the end you wander and repeat the above themes. Consider grouping similar activities in a single paragraph. I enjoyed the writing. Thanks.
Short Story / the Janke show
The basic story appears to be a character study of Janke and his attempt to fix up his cabin. Since you posted this as a short story, I'll critique it as such. The story wanders a bit too much, often without contributing to the plot or character. The café scene, for example, gave us little insight into Janke's mind. We met (and liked) Matty but he didn't play into the plot. In a short story there is no room to throw in extraneous characters. Everything and everyone must contribute to the plot...
