1. Grammar, spelling, punctuation. Line 7- Wisdom, crying, pleads for reason Line 13 - since = sense Line 16, 17 - I hesitated around these lines. I wasn't sure if you would need to add a period at the end of line 16 or to add 'to' at the end of the line. This is a very effective poem. The images are more powerful because you don't announce in one word what is going on. You let us put the pieces together; let us imagine for ourselves and force us to see her pain. However, I didn't get the line "Anger he explains away as adolescence." Is he the same he from the beginning? All in all, I like this because reading it a second time made the images stand out more and they'll be something I'll remember.
I feel as if this poem is constantly trying to come to a conclusion. What I mean is each line seems like the beginning of a sentence...that never ends. Take the first stanza. Is it a complete sentence? complete thought? Or does it continue to the next stanza? I can't tell. The lines are disconnected, even though they are about the same subject. Is each line's subject an implied "Forced indulgence"? This poem works on a purely abstract level. Below that (or above-matter of opinion), I can't ge...
This poem is very vivid and has good imagery. I liked "...the chill that hid in the corners..." and also "The sun spoke of promise and regret..." Very thought-provoking. The only part I'm not sure about are the lines "...and reached for the mirror, cocaine, and straw..." The rest of the poem flows with metaphor, but these lines seem kind of clunky, prosy.
