the only thing better than being fairly compensated is being overly compensated. Like, 'thank you for mowing my lawn sonny, here's 2,000 dollars. spend it on blow and pay per view porn, take a month off work and write your novel, buy yourself something nice because you're the voice of your generation and you deserve it." and you do, deserve it that is, for surviving that coat hanger attack at a tender age, for never being properly misunderstood, for being left out of grunge because flann...

when i get there his brittany is in the open doorway chewing on a stick.pet my dog he says, and I do. I have a handle of dickel in a paper bag and I crack it while he cooks. he's making shrimp diane, standing at the stove in knee high muck boots mincing garlic, blinking behind thick-framed hipster glasses. he drops a full stick of butter ceremoniously into a skillet.this is a man who can row a boat, handle a dog, quarter an elk, smoke chac mool, read poetry with tears in his eyes. he's guided ...

You must like bacon, eat it, bring it home. Your masculine face is more attractive when viewed though the ovulatory lens. When an alley cat yowls and rubs its ass on a lamppost, don’t hesitate to throw the brick because what they want is a caring caveman. See the sitcom father. See his unfulfilled wife. Will him a club to wield until the laugh track stops. This creature pours milk over cereal and wears a pink bathrobe, wants college for the children and a rough strangers hand around ...

We cook on high heat in our apartment of fans and smoke and open windows. We do experiments, first we want something burned and then something seared, and then something raw, and then finally, the only thing rawer than raw, that which is still alive. We eat and then we go to the art show where there are vintage TVs playing workout videos from the 80's, in slow motion, set to harp music. There are poems blown up on parchment paper made to look like scrolls, poems set to harp music. There is a ...

“We said there warn't no home like a raft, after all. Other places do seem so cramped up and smothery, but a raft don't. You feel mighty free and easy and comfortable on a raft.” - The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain On the evening before their permitted launch date Travis was packed and ready to go. He was the type of man who derived pleasure from the preparation and as this was his tenth summer of running river trips, he had his system worked out to a science. Earlier that day ...

there is a lot to like about this piece. I think the overall setting/sense of place that is developed is my favorite part. The themes of innocence vs. ecperience and boyhood coming of age are also handled well. Some very good descriptive lines and even some humor--"People were yelling as if in a great hall. Georges thumb was Modern Art." sticks out in my mind. My two points of critic are rather small, the first being a simple isssue of names. I found the names slightly distracting and I'm no...

i liked this quite a bit, good original imagery. i wasn't crazy about this line: "I gazed out the window over the courtyard… but I digress thinking of the old red kitchen," i think "digress" seems out of place here. other than that, very nice.
