Marcus was the best mucus weaver in the village of Shrivenhell. Each morning, he’d put on the special and slightly feminine red smock that denoted his weaving prowess, and toddle off down the bitumised path leading to Mucusworld Fabrications.
Today was Tuesday, an important day for mucus weavers, Marcus hummed a little tune to get himself in the mood and stretched his knobbly fingers a few times. Soon, the harvesters would arrive pulling wooden carts laden with gossamer mucus threads. Already the assayer’s team was assembled, ready for the delicate task of sorting the fine strands. Marcus hoped there would be more Spanish Influenza stock, he loved its globular red and green patterns, it reminded him of Gaudi and he longed to weave doormats for Gaudi’s castles.
Marcus had a penchant for shoes, more precisely the debris they carried, and his favourite time at work was lunchtime where he would surreptitiously examine his coworker’s shoes, though as he was interested in their soles, he spent a bit of time on the floor. Most of his coworkers thought Marcus had some kind of involuntary twitching problem and graciously gave him a bit of space.
Mucusworld Fabrications had been built on land prematurely reclaimed from the state biological waste dump – a place where all the hospitals and abbatoirs dumped the bits they couldn’t reuse. When it rained, as it was doing now, seemingly random incidences of subsidence revealed a putrid cache rejected by local pie makers not all that long ago.
