Journal, Diary, & Blogging / Cats

Cats are very clever creatures.
I have an outdoor cat I call Speckles, although he is all black. Other times I call him my little black panther as he is lean, sleek and muscular. He always looks after his coat.
He can be both cute and vicious. In the morning when he wants his early meal, he snuggles in for an hour or two then purrs and rubs his nose in my face until I give up and get out of bed to feed him. If I’m really tired I go back to bed, I think he hopes I’ll forget I fed him so tries it again later.
He has a habit of stealing my kitchen sponges and ripping them up at the bottom of my stairs, I’m not sure why he goes for them in particular.
If he wants me to play, he runs and perches himself on the edge of the steps and rubs his back and rolls around with the cutest play with me expression he can give. I normally play until he’s tired out. He loves chasing plastic flowers or a stuffed Tigger toy. The other thing he loves doing is fishing pens out of shoes, pawing pens and stealing them off the table.
He loves hiding in card board boxes and attacking people as they walk by.
I tend to gauge if I can trust friends by him. He’s quite social with most people, but if he doesn’t trust them he has nothing to do with them.
I have one friend who works with Greyhound dogs, he hates her. He hisses at her like mad even if she looks at him. Other times he’ll snuggle up to her; we think it’s the dog smells he doesn’t like.
His favourite foods are tuna, sliced chicken or ham. If I have any of those in my fridge, he tries to put his nose in my fridge everytime I open it.
If I pull my sleeve over my hand and tickle his tummy he attacks me, but I know he loves it, he’ll spend ages playing that game.
My favourite thing with him is when he tries to hide under my bath mat or rug whilst I’m on the toilet. I pull the rug over him and he either hides and attacks my shoe laces or my trouser ties, occasionally he attacks my ankles if he is huffy or doesn’t get his own way. I call him the rug monster when he plays that game.
I have some step ladders above my stairs, sometimes I get him to climb them when I place his Tigger toy on top.
If I visit my friend he sometimes follows me like a dog or waits for me to come out of their houses, I recently started choir practice and he must have seen me heading towards my friends, but I was going for my bus. My friend said he sat at her house waiting for me most of the night, that I think is very clever. He walks along the walls and gateposts and I play a game where he gets to chase and attack my arm along the wall. I live in an upstairs flat and there’s a wooden fence with slats which leads to my balcony, he climbes up it no bother. He is very fit. I’m wondering what he’s going to do when the workmen replace my old wooden stairs with the new metal ones as they’ll be removing most of his little climbing frame, but I’m sure he’ll find a way around that too.
I also love the way he lies lazing like Lord Muck, with his front paws outstretched and crossed observing his surroundings.
Cats, you either love them or hate them. I love him, he has more character than some of the humans I know.

Maria, you know me, and can discard this if you want. George Carlin passed, and he said the difference between cats and dogs is you can beat a dog and it will come back with tail between leg seeking forgiveness. The cat? Pull out the sofa and it will be back there meowing, “Fuck you dude,” or open the front door, and it is out straight saying, “Fuck you dude.”

This is a well written piece and conveys the absolute affection you have for your cat. However, I would offer one critism and that is, it doesn’t really go anywhere, rather just sort of meanders. This is good if you are writing a mood piece, but the truth is, you’re writing a blog. There must be some point to all this, some comparison of his behavior to that of your human friends or some other point to it. I would suggest you give this s title. A title can often give oyu a direction. Did you write five paragraph themes in your schooling? A blog should be like a theme, which a definate hypothesis. Tell me why you love these things, tell me the emotions they bring out in you, don’t juet tell me that you love them. Your last paragraph should be longer and should sum up all the information you’ve give me – even if it’s just to let me know that having a cat can make you’re life more fulfilling. You sort of do that, but there is no thread running through the piece to tie all the paragraphs together.

On the plus side, you have a wonderful style and are very good at describing the cat’s personality. It’s a nice, heart warming piece. It’s very sweet and I like your cat, too. :) You have a good grasp of words and the right things to say, now you just need to put them together and make them relate.

I have three cats- each with their own separate personality. You do have to love them or leave them.  some people just aren’t cat people.  My cats know those people and will immediately go and sit in that person’s lap.

You did a nice job of describing your cat and his own quirks.

Aww kitties… the only source of unconditional love. Don’t need no money, don’t need no car.

My aunt’s got a rabbit and a cat that grew up together, and intriguingly enough, they’ve each taken on traits of the other’s species. The cat hops around like a lemur, and the bunny actually likes being petted. Many an unsuspecting visitor has been moved to conniptions at the sickening cuteness of their pawfights… I agree about personality. Peace Out.

This is the best. The narrator’s cat is quite clever and the closeness of their relationship is clear. The cat acts like a dog in some ways. I had one like that too. She would follow me on walks, off to the side. This is a piece that warmed my heart. A real feel good read. Thank you for sharing.
Peace

An informative piece on your cat.  You seem to cover everything about him and most of it is really cute.  I have a couple of problems with it though.  ”If he wants me to play, he runs and perches himself on the edge of the steps and rubs his back and rolls around with the cutest play with me expression he can give.”  The words “play with me” should be made into one hyphenated word so it reads easier.  Also see if you can do away with some of the ‘ands’.  You could make this into a couple of sentences.

Pull the piece together into more coherent paragraphs.  Many of the one line paragraphs would fit into some of the bigger ones.

“If I visit my friend he sometimes follows me like a dog or waits for me to come out of their houses, I recently started choir practice and he must have seen me heading towards my friends, but I was going for my bus.”  This is a long rambling sentence, please make two or three sentences out of it.  Also the first part of this line seems wrong.  Shouldn’t the cat follow and wait instead of or wait?  I love the ending.

Not sure what to tell you. I enjoyed this and smiled whilst reading it, quite likely because I am a total cat lover.

Our cat loves sponges too – which is weird because he is so OCD about hygiene.

Love the last line. Very true and believed by all cat lovers. We love them more than people because they can be more human than people.

Your cat sounds like a special one that you have a beautiful bond with.

Thanks for sharing!

Oh this is so cute. I have an all black cat that looks like a panther as well and this story reminded me so much of her. I know what you mean about cats being clever. I play this game with mine where she chases a string around in a circle, then I’ll suddenly switch gears and go the other way. She is so smart that she’s way ahead of me and waiting for me to come the other way patiently. It’s so clever. She also plays fetch like a dog which is unbelivably smart to me. I think you are right, people either love cats or they hate them. I will always be a cat lover.

I love the description of your cat’s specific mannerisms. They’re quirky but at the same time resonate with anyone who has ever owned a cat. This is a very sweet and well-written piece!
