Non-fiction / Native American Stereotypes
People have the wrong idea about Native Americans. They think what they see in the movies are completely true. This is called stereotype. The stereotype is that they all live in tepees and hunt buffalo. While many Native Americans did this, some lived differently. I will show you some examples of other Native Americans that were not like that.
Arctic is a great example of a Native American region. There were Aleuts, Inuit, and Yupik that lived there. They had to adapt to cold winters and short summers. They mainly hunted but they gathered clams and berries. Their villages had fifty to one hundred fifty residents that lived there.
Although Sub Arctic was near by, they were very different. The tribes there were Cree, Onondaga, and Slave. The climate there was harsh. They hunted, fished, and gathered for food. Much of the land there was covered in forests and lakes.
On the whole other side of the New Land, there were the Northeast Woodlands. The tribes that used this region were Miami, Fox, and Sauk. They had a lot of water to drink and use. They were, unfortunately, always on the move for food. The water there supported at least forty tribes. Native Americans are to have been thought of different then what they are. Movie directors are not always true. While some Native Americans are like that, some aren’t.
