Non-fiction / interview with him
alright. this interview is about playing live, being a musician, and basically everything around that. It would be great if you could respond with a sentence or two for each one. thanks a lot man. here ya go.
1. When did you first realize that music could be a full time job? I kind of fell into this, I didn’t think you could unless you were a part of the select few bands that make a living off playing heavy music, but I’ve realized over time that you’re in control of your success. I guess I finally accepted it when I saw that kids enjoyed the music and hanging out… it was like “hey I could actually do this if I wanted”.
2. What was it like the first time you performed live at a venue? Well i’ve always been really shy and for the most part “quiet”. It was wrecking on my nerves all day, trying to remember lyrics, vocal patterns and every now and then i’d realize that i’ve never performed in front of anyone, ever. It was a scary thought but after a few seconds it all goes away and I felt a little bit more comfortable. It’s the kind of thing that takes a little time to get used to.
3. How long have you been playing shows, and how many shows have you played? I’ve been playing shows for about 3 years on and off, but mainly in the last 2 years i’ve been playing shows about every weekend. I’d say i’ve played over 100 shows between two different bands.
4. Do you have any interesting stories playing live? haha Nothing to interesting, In my current band there has been 5 fights during our set, we don’t encourage fighting and our music is relatively violence free but for some reason a few people thought fighting sounded like a good idea. We get hurt all the time, cuts, stitches, black eyes, you name it, it’s probably happened. We tend to accidentally hit each other when we’re playing. At a show in ohio Cody ( our youngest member) hit himself in the face with his guitar shortly after his face was covered in blood. I guess we’re not in the safest business haha.
5. Is it a struggle to balance everything else in your life when being dedicated to a band? Not at all, everyone in this band is in this band because it’s all they want and everything else comes second. We’re willing to sacrifice everything to do this.
6. Is ‘The Revival Sound” a full time job for you, or do you have another job as well? For those of us that have jobs we work just to pay for necessities like insurance, gas, and financial things the band needs. But the band is starting to become a job, you have to look at it that way to ever push forward.
7. What was it like the first time you were signed to a label? I didn’t know what to think really, I’ve never been signed and had no idea what it meant for us. and to be honest I thought the least bit about it because i’m a skeptical person but I guess some guy enjoyed our band and wanted to help push us further so it couldn’t be a bad thing, sometimes it can be a tremendous amount of weight lifted off your shoulders.
8. Have you ever had any technical issues when playing live shows? haha oh yeah, broken strings, broken drums, Microphone doesn’t work, cords shorting out, you name it and it has happened. I think with us more because we tend to forget how rough we are with our equipment.
9. Have you had any recording problems/issues? The only thing that can really happen that will set recording back is vocal issues, like the vocalist losing his/ her voice. it’s happened to me once and it was terrible, I had to go back 2 weeks later when I was 100 percent. It still put a halt on the bands productivity .
10. What are some steps you took to rise up in the music industry and get signed? Drop our idea of what music is or should be, just play what we love and not what we think people want to hear. We have all these influences but to be honest we could never do what they do, so why not do what they didn’t? Just work and work and work until we know our songs like we should and hold nothing back.
11. Is there a lot of stress when preparing for shows? there really isn’t unless we’re playing a new song or new material, usually we’re pretty easy going until we’re ready to start and we all change into weirdos.
12. Have you ever been on tour before? yeah, the longest outing i’ve been on was 30 days. After so long you kind of lose track of what time it is or where you are it, it’s kind of relieving to not have a schedule except “when do we play, where is the band?”. tour is my favorite part of being in a band.
13. What are the good and bad points of the touring lifestyle? well the good points are meeting a ton of new people, possibly making the best friends you can have, making connections that can help push your band further, seeing so much of America and just being out with your friends, there is nothing better than that.
but of course there are negatives to everything, sometimes you don’t always get a shower, or a lot of sleep or the best food. Sometimes promoters might short you some money that you need to get to the next show, or even just dealing with shady bad people but it’s worth it.. every bit of it.
14. Is having a band like having a family? It’s like having another mother, father, brother, etc… They are the best friends you could ever have and you know everything about eachother and sometimes you get on eachothers nerves but that just comes with being around them every day. I Wouldn’t want to be in this band without them.
15. Do you have any interesting touring stories? We were in the Midwest, and stopped at a gas station we noticed there was about 10,000,000 moths flying around the lights at the gas pumps.. That was already weird and unsettling, we had to get out and pump gas in these moths, so as I get the nerve to do it the attendant comes running towards our pump he’s shouting “NOOOOOOOO”. Apparently you aren’t allowed to pump your own gas… Thats kind of interesting, all the other interesting things might not have been appropriate for some readers haha.
