When her shorts were too short
and his pants were sagging
When she was late for class
and his grades were lagging
When he dyed his hair purple
got in fights in the hall
When she got her tongue pierced
middle of last Fall
When he back-talked the teacher
one day at school
When he got sent out of class
for flaunting the rules
When she lit up a cigarette
during school hours
When they chose to have sex
in the school showers
You saw that

You saw them holding hands
in the halls
Shmoozing and talking
about the malls
You saw her lean against him
just about to kiss
You were quick to call their names
before they could touch lips
You saw girls sitting in guys’ laps
in the lobby after school
You reminded them they were still on campus
and that it was against the rules
You reminded them of the rules
you were always watching them
Watching for signs of romance
between her and him
Watching for any sign
of hugging or kissing
Of holding hands at school
....but something was missing…

All this while
someone was watching me
Leaning over my desk
for all to see
Making suggestive comments
for any to hear
Or walking by my desk
He whispers in my ear
I waited to ask you a question
standing before your desk
And he stopped next to me
wanting only to pesk
Though I moved over a step
there remained none between
You had only to look up
It was all there to see
When it was your turn to guard the halls
between one and the next class
You didn’t see him putting
his hand on my ass
You didn’t hear me telling
him to back off
Yet I swear I was heard
throughout the hall
You didn’t see us
that day in gym
When my body almost rubbed
flush against him
He had me trapped
between him and a wall
I had to slide over
to stand up at all
You didn’t see him waiting
when I got off the bus
You didn’t see him approach me
outside during lunch
You didn’t see him waiting
after school by the door
Long after he’d dropped out
allowed there no more
But I usually saw you
just over there
I knew you saw everything
guess you didn’t care
