Criticism / 5 is good?

Okay, I think it’s important that the reviewers of this site have common sense. This who rating system is not that complicated, 1-10, where do people go wrong in rating things?

Not sure what I’m talking about? I’m hoping I’m not the only one who’s experienced this twisted form of playing with my enjoyment in spending credits. Well, I look at my items that have new revies.

Yay! New review!

Hm, they lowered the rating, oh well, they must have some good criticism! I mean, they lowered my piece from 8.5 to 7.33 in the one goal I had set!

Unlock review

“This was a very good piece, I felt you told your message very well, the words practically jumped at me blah blah blah. Keep up the good work!”

Okay, I’ve come to the conclusion that after 7/10 of my reviews being like this, either…

A) Reviewers think that ratings like 5 or 6 are good, yet fail to remember that in school, 7 out of ten was a C-, let alone a magnificent amount above that “good” 5 or “great” 6.

B) They did it on accident (unlikely if over half of them do it).

C) They’re trying to beat around the bush by making it seem like that one honest person did all the bad rating in that piece, not them: the innocent kind reviewers.

Which is it? Why do people do this? Is it a fear of getting a low reviewer stat? I’m straightforward on all of my reviews, if only 70% of those I review appreciate, Great! Those 30% were either emotioanlly frail old people, or emotionally overdone pre-teens and young adults that don’t realize this world has things to tell you other than “Great Job!”

All in all, tell me when I suck, I’d rather hear it here, where I come to professionally have my work looked at. Or at least have the decency to know your damn rankings and realize that 8 is “good” not 5!

Hahaha! Sorry, I’m not laughing at you. But I must admit I get a little jazzed when I read an Urbis-oriented rant. This one was especially good. Italics are used to indicate sarcasm.

”...where do people go wrong in rating things?” This too bugs me at times, but then I remind myself that I’m here to become a better writer rather than (as a comrade describe it) the tallest midget at the circus.

I would much rather have a 1 given to me and get some really tough, yet valid criticism than a 10 for a bland, yet utterly un-refundable review. In the end what do high rankings get a person? My answer: a few days in the literary pantheon of the Urbis rankings page. This is until some fraudulent sonofabitch creates five separate accounts and ranks his (it’s always a him) post-adolescent angst poetry all tens. Five. Times.

And of course, rating is always subjective. Not everyone is going to agree on what constitutes a 5; but with an arbitrary number of reviews (let’s say ten), an appropriate average should prevail.

new revies. / reviews.

In closing I must say that I feel your pain. This happens to everyone. But just remind yourself that you’re here to get feedback on your writing. Don’t let the “emotionally overdone pre-teens” or anyone for that matter get you down. Just keep writing. I’ve included another notorious Urbis rant at the bottom. Thanks for sharing.
