Young Adult / Flight Of The Raven (Chapter One)
Chapter One
1990
In the great master bedroom; as the lightning flashed and the thunder roared, a new life began. At the same instant the child was being handed to her mother, which was exactly as the grandfather clock in the hall was chiming the hour of midnight on October 31, 1990; a large raven flew in through the open window and perched on one of the posts of the large iron bed.
“Raven,” Rene’ Dawn murmured, looking first at the staring black bird, then down at the cocoa colored infant in her arms.
Hearing the word; the midwife most everyone in Moses, Oregon called on when their time came, thinking it was the name meant for the child, filled out the birth record. Signing it and placing her seal on it, she put the paper in her briefcase and set it aside. That was how Raven Dawn became the name of the newest Voodoo princess.
“I wish your father were here little one, he would be so proud of you.”
The smell of incense filled the air. A pot of Rosemary tea sat on the bedside table. White candles burned throughout the room to chase away any bad or evil spirits.
The chanting women, who had been sitting on the floor at the foot of the bed, stood up and began waving ostrich feather fans in the air, to cool the room for the new mother and small princess. No electric lights were on in the room because Rene’ Dawn knew that any electricity running through the room could stop the good vibes of life from flowing. You see, Rene’ had been born in a small Tahitian village and was very superstitious. She was also well versed in the arts of both Voodoo and Witchcraft.
Rubi, the Queen of the local voodoo sect and grandmother of the newborn princess, took the child from her mother. She wrapped the infant in a newly killed sheep skin which had been cleaned and scraped, then soaked in uniodized salt and blessed by the Voodoo shaman, especially for the birth of the new princess. Taking the child out onto the widow’s walk, which ran along outside the floor to ceiling window, she held the child up to the sky and dedicated the tiny life to the Gods of life, love and purity. After chanting the ritual of dedication, she returned to the room and lay the child into the waiting arms of her mother.
Rene’ spoke softly to the infant she held in her arms, “My darling, you were born on the most powerful sabbat of the year and many trials lay ahead of you. While you will know nothing of mine and your father’s beliefs until you are twelve,” she paused to kiss her daughters soft down covered cheek, “You will have many things happen to you that others, outside your family, know nothing about, nor would they even believe in them.”

Usually I need a good cliff hanger to latch me on to a story. I just thought this was very well written. Like the words you used help me picture that whole night of the birth. I loved that you describe the child skin color using the word cocoa also. I didn’t spot any errors or misspellings. I was kind of confused of what this child represent, but sure it would be cleared up in future chapters.
