Stage Play / No one knows why

No-one knows why

Mel: Well, it will be a huge shock for Dia when she realizes that we are going to get married. I mean, after all that has happened. You are meeting her after four years and that too, to invite her to your wedding.

Tim: Yea… Mel. That was college. But now things have changed. We are smarter and more practical. I shall come in a minute. I will just slide in the wedding card. I can’t face her…

Bell rings. Dia opens the door. It is Tim. Dia looks at this person in astonishment.

Tim:  Hello…Won’t you ask me to come in? At least don’t stare at me in that way! You still have the same spark in your eyes that you had four years while we were in the college.   You still have the smile. You still have the…

Dia: Yea, Yea. I know. You still have not left your habit of buttering up. Any ways get in. Tell me where have you been since last four years. You dint even bother to reply to any of my e-mails. I mean I just lost the touch with you. I guess, hmm. Last time I had seen you was about four years ago at the farewell party. I mean we haven’t met since that day. Sit down. I shall get you some coffee.

Tim: Yea. Actually immediately after the final exams, I had to leave the country. Dad had suffered from the heart stroke. I had to go to New york. I had to pick up the reins of the family business, since doctors said that dad can go to the Super dad any moment. He expired a year ago. I got into business and got so busy. Yea, I did feel like calling you. In fact calling you, many a times, but…

Dia: Yea. I know. You will never call me. You will never make the first move. You will never say sorry. But you could have called any of the other friends. You could have called Mel. Mel being my best friend would have told me all about you.

Tim: If you were so concerned even you could have tried to find my number and perhaps give me a call.

Dia: Well, I guess it was the mistake on the part of both of us.

Tim: Mistake—I don’t think it was my mistake.

Dia: I dint get you…

Tim: Did you really want me to call. I mean. Come on. We had broken up.  I agree we had parted ways amicably but still.  I believe I knew you then and also know you well enough today. Won’t you have got hurt, every time I called?

Dia: I am not sure. I guess you have moved on. Let it be. I mean, today I am married, as you might know. Perhaps the source from where you got the address might have also told you that I have married Nic.

Tim: Yea I know. Mel did tell me about this. Well perhaps then, I should be mad at you. You dint even invite me at your wedding.

Dia: I will get you some coffee. I guess we have to talk about the four years in a very short span….

Dia: Here you are. Here is your coffee. Did you marry?

Tim: What do you think?

Dia: I think you are married. Aren’t you?

Tim: No I have not committed the suicide as yet.

Dia: O…O! You dint marry, you dint marry since…?

Tim: WoWoWo… Before you jump onto any conclusions, wait. I have signed my death warrant. I am engaged. You thought that I would never ever marry.  I mean did you seriously think that for your sake…Come on. Let me tell you, you still haven’t left your habit of drawing conclusions too quickly.

Mel: Hey Tim…

Tim: Coming…

Dia: Who is calling you…? Perhaps even you have not learnt, not to be too particular about smaller mistakes. You always had that obsession for perfection. Nobody is perfect. You never were. You never will be. Perhaps that’s the very reason why we were better off.

Tim: Well it was not my mistake at all. You told your father that we liked each other. I had told you not to utter a word till the time I was getting set in my life. I had told you. I had told you to remain mum. I had told you, that when time comes, things will take care of themselves. I will ask your father. But you spilt the beans. You spoilt the game.

Dia: Yea it was altogether my fault. Yea it was my fault that you are a Christian and I am Brahmin. It was my fault that my age was running over. Obviously, my dad is a villain. Why should he think of his daughter’s wedding when she is twenty-six. Who was he to have taken decisions for me? Yes you are right Tim. It was my mistake that being in the MBA class, you being twenty-nine, you still wanted time to set up your life.  Yes it is my mistake that I told my father when he was fixing my marriage with some idiot whom I only liked but not loved.

Tim: Don’t be sarcastic. Don’t taunt me.

Dia: Taunt! I never taunted you. I just stated the facts. You will never say sorry. Why should you? It’s my fault. As per you it would have been a piece of cake for me to adjust and prepare myself mentally to marry Nick. Don’t you forget, even after the college I had waited for three years. Perhaps hoping that Mr. Tim might have so called settled down in his life. I had chalked a full strategy with Mel, as to how we would convince my dad, once you would come or make any kind of contact. I just kept on waiting. The game just drifted away.

Tim: The circumstances were such that… it was absolutely impossible for me to move to India or perhaps try and approach you.

Dia: Were circumstances so grim that you couldn’t even have called Mel to at least let us know that you existed. Perhaps you dint think that some person in some part of the world was still missing you and needed your support.

Tim: Well I had never expected that you would be waiting for me.  I thought that you will never ever think of me again. I thought you had moved on. I thought that you were one of those practical girls who will forget and move on. I thought…

Dia: You thought! The biggest problem with you, right from the time I knew you is that you think a lot. How wrong were you! You think you are a super cool dude. You waited for four long years, before plunging into a commitment, and don’t even try to fool me that you dint miss me. Watch straight into my eyes and tell me that you dint miss me…never ever.

Tim: Dia…I actually wanted to ask you that…

Dia: WHAT now!

Tim: Can I get some more coffee.

Bell rings. Tim gets to the door. Mel comes in.

Mel: Tim did you give the wedding card to Dia?

Dia: Which card?

Mel: O! So you both were playing Hide and seek till now! I mean, Tim I was waiting for you in the car downstairs. You said you will just slide the card in through the front door and will return and that you did not want to meet Dia.

Dia: {amazed} Mel! You are getting married to Tim!

Mel: Yea. It was meant to be a surprise. When Tim came to India a month ago, he was frantically looking for you. Somehow he managed to get my number. We met and he was shattered to know that you have married. I consoled him. Then we met again. Tim had decided that he should never marry anyone. I had always had crush on Tim. You know it don’t you? I mean during college days, you were lucky enough.
But fate meant new twists. I scraped around for four years trying to find an ideal match. Tim and I decided that enough of Wait and Watch. Tim had lost you because he wanted to wait. Now we felt that we should settle down. We don’t feel that we have energy left in us to try and find love again. So we have decided to tie the nuptial knot on 29th Feb. Tim actually had something to say to you. Tim…

Tim: I am sorry… I am late…

Dia: Hey its ok mate.  It’s all in the game.

Tim: I had one more thing to say. You still blabber the way you used to. You just don’t stop. It’s like a gun firing shots at you and just doesn’t stop.

Dia:

Tim: Look. It still is a killer look.

Dia: I have got few confessions to make about today. Your dimples are so cute. Today, when I saw you I felt like pulling those cheeks of you and that google woogle woch… O… don’t blush! Your fiancée is here. She will kill you if you even try to flirt.

Mel: Yea…! Perhaps fate is what decides who is paired with whom. Perhaps…no1knowsy. But, then if every thing we wish comes true than what’s the fun in leading the life…

{They all cuddle together and end}

You start out interesting, guy abdandons girl, guy is marrying girl’s best friend, but then kind of slowly fade away.  You have a very good sense of backstory here, but the drama could be worked up a little more. Create a problem. Also, I would try to explain a littl emore about Dia and why she married Nick, why she lives in India, and who Nick is.

Your langauge sounds a tad bit awkward at times and not exactly right. The simplist way is just read everything aloud, the words that are on the page- not what shoud be there- and mark where pauses should be and what sounds funny.

Also, you have need of some stage directions and stage setup. Tell the actors what they are doing and where they are. Describe what the characters look like.

Overall, this has a lot of potnetial. I think that making this into a short story would be a great idea. If you rework some minor issues this could become a very good stage play.
