Sci Fi & Fantasy / Varlets Journey Chapter 1 (Analysis)

”I’ll drink the nasty stuff u told me about, I just cant do this..” and she sobbed.  Joyce had just over dosed and been depressed for some time now. Memories unfolded began to over take her in ways she never though possible. “you better drink this, if you don’t we have to put the tube down your throat again” The nurse said frustrated, because Joyce had pulled the tube out that was taking all the poison out of her body. Luckily, she was ok, and she did what she was told. But she still was not the same person. Something had changed her, something had turned her life around.
The Next few years were constant ups and downs. Roller coaster rides. Two suicidal attempts and many hospital visits. Out of desperation she found herself in a violent relationship which then led to her being in a shelter and counseling.
“Ever since I remembered what happened to me when I was little……I am just not the same person.” Joyce said sobbing. “I used to go to church, I was responsible, Now, my life has just fallen apart…” The councilor looked at her, and re-assured her that she made the right choice starting counseling. She proceeded to tell Joyce that there were some techniques that the counselor wanted to try to help alleviate some anxiety. “I would like to try this one technique, I have been trained with and I really think it will be helpful to you. It will help us know what your triggers. Before we start, I want to ask you to do one thing for me this week. I need you to think of a safe place. Take your time this week and think of anything. It could be the ocean, a old familiar place, or something you make up in your mind. As long as it is something that makes you feel safe inside. When you come back next week we will talk about it more.”
During the week, Joyce did think about what her counselor said. It almost seemed as though it took very little thought for her. When She went to Counseling again they talked about her safe place.
“Well, I guess its been something I have already discovered. I see myself in the woods walking with a Lion…I think that is my safe place.” The counselor smiled,” That’s interesting, Can you describe it a little more for me?” Joyce closed her eyes, thought about her safe place. “ The woods are dark green, I am wearing a white dress. It’s kind of cool, and my  dress is flowing. The lion walks with me like he is guiding me. I feel as though he is protecting me. I don’t know where we are going, but the lion stays with me.”
Later that night Joyce began to pray, “God, what is wrong with me? help me God please, I need help.”
The fact is, this all had to happen for her to grow and move on and maybe help others. Even though she couldn’t see it. She felt helpless  as though her life was over or that she was a disease in society with all kinds of mental and emotional issues and she blamed God. God had and has a plan and quietly he was working in her heart and she didn’t even see the ways God was working. Joyce didn’t even know that there were  people put in her life that would in the long run help her come to terms and deal with the past. Even though she became hard in her heart, secretly God was working wonders.
This is where the story of Varlet begins. Varlet represents Joyce and this is her spiritual journey through her healing of her past and eventually finding her way back.

                    Varlet awakens
“Varlet……Varleeet….wake up! Wake up Varlet!” A deep voice said. Varlet looked around and saw no one. She had been in this cold dark room for some time. In fact, it’s been depressing her. She snuggled her blanket in the corner of the cold dark room that she had been in for days, weeks. When she looked around again she heard a voice say,”Varlet, over here..!” when she looked all of a sudden a door that shined bright like gold and then a dove appeared from nowhere with a note in it’s beak. The dove then dropped the letter in front of her and then the dove disappeared into no where. Varlet looked and bent down to pick up the letter. The letter was sealed with the gold letters A O and G all in one circle as though they were one. When she opened the letter a familiar prayer was echoed in the room, “ God, what is wrong with me? Why am I feeling these feelings?..help me God..please…I’m scared..” Then when Varlet looked at the letter again the words” I Will Never Leave Nor Forsake you.”
She Began to cry realizing that it was time to go on a journey. It was time to face the truth of what had been holding her back and keeping her in the cold dark room. She did not know it but she made a choice that would change her life. Her mind and spirit were off to an adventure that only she could tell the story of. Varlet rose up and opened the door before her. When she opened the door it creaked as though it had not been opened for ages.  She was hesitant, and scared but just as she thought maybe she would just stay a owl appeared with glowing eyes.  He spoke with great urgency” enter with caution, you must shield yourself and use great courage to go beyond this door.” Varlet shook and paused. “Maybe I should not be here.” Then as if the owl knew what Varlet was thinking said,” If you just believe, a shield of protection and courage will guide you.” So Varlet began to walk and begin her journey in what seemed to be a wilderness. As she took a step forward she realized she was not in a room, not in a closet but somewhere outdoors. She heard crows and trees rustling with the wind. She felt grass, and the earth under her bare feet. Just as Varlet took one step in the doorway the door slammed behind her. When she turned to look behind her there was no door anymore. “what have I done?” varlet thought to herself. But she continued to walk hoping that somehow, someway, someone would guide her.
At this time it was dark and night time. The only light that she had was the moon above her and it was barely enough to see where she was going. All of a sudden she heard the sound of flapping wings and when she turned her head she realized the owl was following her. “ Just follow the moon, it will be your guide for the night.”
“Who are you?” Varlet asked nervous.
“They call me Goth, guide of the hour. I ‘m here to help guide you to your shield and receive your courage.”
“Well, Goth where might this shield and courage I’m supposed to receive be?”
“Trust me Varlet, just follow the moon and me and I’ll make sure you get there.”
“Well, I hope we get there soon because this place freaks me out more than being in that dark room.” Varlet looked around and saw many glowing eyes, and sounds that just scared her even more. “ At least no one bothered me in the dark room and at least I had a blanket.” She seemed oblivious to the fact that there was someone guiding her and was ungrateful for it. Goth didn’t say anything but just made sure she was with him, because he knew that she may easily be distracted to go somewhere else with all that was in the wilderness. Most people that traveled this place seemed to find themselves in some pretty sticky situations before they figure out that they need some guidance. They seem to always ask for guidance but at first most of the people seem to ignore it and a few have never returned to find what they needed to get through the wilderness. Goth shook his head hoping Varlet wasn’t one of the ones to go astray and he’d have to go looking for her. He was especially hoping she wouldn’t find herself lost to never come back. “Just make sure no matter what you stay with me, no matter what. There have been a few that….”
“Well what? Why do I have to be so careful to stay with you, what’s so terrible here?” Varlet said annoyed and frustrated that she couldn’t just stay in the dark room.
“I’ll just say that , there have been a few that seem to …well, get lost and never return..” Goth said realizing she was a bit stubborn and she may easily find herself going her own way.
Goth and Varlet continued to walk through the dark woods and it seemed to be hours to Varlet. Just as Varlet grew tired of walking in the dark Goth landed in front of a small wooden cabin. It looked old and  the lights inside were very dim. “ well, here we are Varlet, this is where we will stay for the night.”  Goth said relieved that they had made it in peace and still hoping that Varlet would make it through the night. Goth opened the door and when they both walked in there was a fire place with the fire burning and which seemed to be the only light in the whole cabin. Varlet looked around and there were two tall chairs made out of dark red wood, big enough for a giant to sit in, with red satin cushions and a small table between the two chairs in front of the fire place. The kitchen was small with an old stove and a few shelves beside the stove with herbs, spices, and a few loaves of bread. In the middle of the kitchen was a small table with two chairs  On the table were two hot bowls of soup and  looked as though the soup had just gotten done cooking with steam coming off the soup. Varlet smelled Beef, onion and all kinds of vegetables and as she walked closer she saw that it was beef stew. She then walked out the kitchen into the living room and noticed a small room in back and it was a small bedroom with a full bed and a pretty pink floral quilt and lots and lots of pillows. Next to the bed was a small, very small wooden table about as wide as a tissue box and on top of the table was one single red rose in a blue vase and a clock that was round and looked as if it lived through some tough times. As she continued to look in the bed room she noticed a another letter with the same seal and same letters that appeared on the letter that she had received when she first walked through the doors of the wilderness. She walked over to the bed and sat then picked the letter up and opened it. The first page said, To my Dear Varlet, She looked up and thought to her self , ‘this is to odd, another letter written to me?’ She then continued to read it said,
‘Varlet, may this journey be your journey to a new life and new meaning as you follow your guide. What ever you do trust your guide, you cannot journey the wilderness on your own.’   Angel of God
“Varlet, come join me and eat this wonderful stew!” Goth said
“I’m coming”
So they both ate the stew, quietly. Varlet was still unsure. She thought about the letter she had just read but was more preoccupied about where she was and it wasn’t the dark room anymore. Goth ate his stew like he hadn’t eaten in days. “My, my I always love this stew! It sure hits the spot in my belly” He chuckled and looked at Varlet. Goth was beginning to get worried. “Varlet dear, you haven’t said much all night we’re in a nice cozy place, warm and quiet. What’s wrong?”
“ Nothing, I’m just thinking.”
“Well, you know what they say, thinking too much gets you into trouble.” He chuckled and realized Varlet was not amused at all.
“Well, what do I got do to get a laugh or smile out of yah, I bet you got a pretty smile too.”  Then he gave her a wink hoping to get something, a grin maybe. Varlets’ lips moved enough to get half a grin. “Now, that’s better.” Goth said.
Varlet began to feel tired after eating maybe half of her stew and even yawned a few times. She wondered if Goth would mind if she went to bed and as if Goth knew what she was thinking Goth told her to go lie down and so she did. Before Goth could turn his head after she left the table, she was already lying in bed asleep. Goth peaked in and thought what a precious site. After watching her for a few minutes he then thought to himself,’ maybe she’ll make it to tomorrow after all, just maybe.’ And he smiled at the thought that he might not have to chase after someone for once.
