Althought it pays to be ambitious, this aphorism generally applies to most people. Especially writers, for whom it is crucial to remain focused on one work and not running around writing several. I have heard people say “I am working on three projects at the moment” which sounds impressive, but I know that they aren’t going to finish 2/3 of those projects, and will struggle like hell to finish the first.
This depends on a writer’s own ability to manage their writing and can also apply in the wider world of work and relationships. To quote Bob Dylan, “too much of nothing can make a man ill at ease, one man’s temper might rise, while another’s temper might freeze.”
Your quote says the opposite but highlights the reason why some do too many things at once, they are afraid of being inactive. It is surprising how many writers are frightened to sit alone at their terminals and wrestle with the silence of their imaginations.
An astute and wise quote, and one every writer would do well to memorise from the very beginning.
