Crime, Thrillers & Mystery / Redemption-Prologue (Analysis)

     Thursday, May 15th. 5:30 a.m.

James “Jimmy” Thanatoni was running for his life.
He raced down narrow alleyways, Beretta in his holsters, wind running through his long brown hair. Every few seconds, he grabbed both guns, turned around and fired some shots at his ski-masked pursuers, reloading on the run. The holsters slowed him down a little, but not enough for the men to catch up. He had no clue where he was going, only knowing that he needed to get away from his would-be killers. He heard a gunshot and ducked. The bullet ricocheted a few feet above him. He just kept sprinting until he reached the end of the alley.
Praying that he did not come up on a dead end, he sprinted down Spade Street and into an alley to the left. The dark alley gave him little comfort, as he heard four pairs of footsteps not too far away. Coming to the end, he saw a brick wall and was devastated for a moment. His sadness turned to relief when he spotted a fire escape leading to the roofs.         Leaping and running up the wall, he grabbed a hold of the ladder and started to pull himself up.
As he reached the top of the ladder, he heard someone scream, “He went up onto the roof!”
Jimmy sprinted across the rooftops to make it to the fire escape on the other side. Heart racing, he mustered a grin. He thought he was going to escape. Until he heard the gunshot. As he tried to dodge the bullet, his foot hit a vent and he fell over the side of the roof and down six stories into a dumpster.
For once, he was glad that the garbage men had come late.
Climbing out, he pulled some mayonnaise-covered aluminum foil of his face. Smelling like old garbage, he wondered what these people were eating. He was pulled away from this thought by loud voices.
Looking up, he saw the four men arguing and searching for Jimmy. One of them, wearing a pale green mask, pointed at him and yelled, ”There! How did he survive?!?”
As the four assassins pulled out their guns, Jimmy turned and ran out of the alley. As he reached the end, he heard a third gunshot. His luck ran out as the bullet went though his right arm. Screaming in pain, he dropped to his knees and grabbed his arm. Looking back in fear, he saw the killers climbing down the fire escape. Putting both guns in his holsters, he hobbled down the street. He saw the church, St. Michael’s Cathedral, and headed there. Lungs raging, he shouldered open the doors and tumbled inside.
After doubling over and panting for a few moments, he looked up. The old church was decorated beautifully for a funeral. Roses and lilies adorned every inch of the cathedral, from the pews to the alter. A pedestal to hold the coffin was positioned in front of the alter, ready for the coffin to be brought in that morning. On either side, there was a picture of a familiar man. Jimmy came to the conclusion that the man was from work. He stumbled towards the alter. Sensing someone was there, he took a gun in his left hand and turned around quickly. He found himself aiming at a priest, armed only with a broom.
Jimmy lowered his weapon and said “Help me, please.”
