This one packs a punch! The obvious double standard of the sacrificial wine, a substance with alcoholic content, being reverently consumed in Church, whilst a nip of brandy from a hip flask would obviously have the worshipper excorted to the doors …. is trenchent, telling and witty …. I love it!
This short phrase brings up many thought on ‘religious claptrap” which have haunted me for most of my life. The Bible is replete with references to wine. Not perjorative references … just ordinary comments which indicate wine was a staple in those times. Only later did we stigmatize it.
Tragically in the West, our attitude to sex has been warped beyond repair by the Church. Now what was once a sacred and joyous union with the divine, is the province of strip clubs an pornography. In India, where I spent most of my life, I bowed before statues of gods in erotice embrace and placed flowers on the shrine symbolizing the sexual organs of male and female. In America I have cried for twenty years over what has been done to this holy gift.
So I reponded to your piece on “hypocrisy” quite viscerally. Thanks.
Your short words … evoked an appreciate chuckle … and a small tear.
