Poetry / Cardboard Life

There’s four walls
The area is small
But it’s home for the night
Safe from winter’s bite

A bottle to keep me warm
A familiar burn
It’ll help me forget
Save me from regret

My neighbor is mumbling in his sleep
On the other side I hear someone weep
Today I watched another die
God, how I wish it was I

At least I’m safe in my cardboard home
But I still feel so alone
In this city filled with people
How I wish I could be their equal

All day long I waited in line
Hoping that maybe this time
I would have a chance to prove
What I can really do

A simple task
Is all I ask
To put my life back on track
That’s all I lack

But here I am home again
I know that I’ll never win
In this cardboard community I will die
In an unmarked grave I will lie

Death will bring me peace
With the last breath that I’ll release
Another will take my place
In my cardboard space.

I’m not sure what to say. If this is where you really are, then life is not fair at all. Your poem is brutally honest and painfully, all too aware of your suroundings. Did you type this at a library? Or are you just realising where many people are at in this country, which is supposed to be “The greatest nation on earth”. Hang in there!
