Pixie Dust
Chapter 1
Lights in the Sky
Arina was quick to find her two story, three bedroom house despite there being almost no light to guide her way home; it was evident that Arina knew her way around the area, maybe even the city. As she stood in front of her house, she could feel a sense of accomplishment flowing within her; the girl had a good day in school today. She had a heart-to-heart with her mentor Ivana Princeton and Jay Evans had commented on her acting today which made her feel pretty fuzzy warm on the inside.
The girl’s heart quickened its pace as she fantasized about Jay; he was an idol to her. Jay Evans was one of the most popular guys in school and although Arina was above swooning, she couldn’t help but imagine a relationship with him. He had all the qualities a girl like Arina could ever want: Domineering confidence, a calm outlook at life and a wonderful, sparkling sense of humor. The man had a tender heart that girls and women everywhere could find themselves adoring. All in all, Jay was a jewel. She was delighted to hear a few days ago that he was single; this was her chance to attack!
Then again, what chances did she have with him? Sure he complimented her acting skills today and that seemed a lot like progress but, how long will it take get him to honestly, thoroughly notice her? Months, maybe even a year she figured as she twisted her front door’s knob to the right, letting herself in. And besides, he’s a senior! Arina’s practically the age of a freshman, and he probably saw her more as a little sister than anything else. He was an amazing man, but what was so amazing about herself? She couldn’t find one eye-catching detail about her personality or her status among the social chain at school.
She diminished her hopes in the end, unwilling to believe that she was truly a magnificent person like Jay Evans; if she knew any better her mentor Ivana was a better match for him than anyone else. They talk as if they’ve known each other forever, they’re playful and they like to tease each other like any regular couple would. They seemed to mingle with each other in harmony, perfect rhythm. Arina could barely get a sentence in a conversation with Jay, how she envied Ivana.
“Arina, is that you?” her father’s calls brought her back down to Earth, where reality needed her to pay attention. Her mouth contorted to a worried smirk, hoping she didn’t freak out her dad too much. She could see it now: Akito Tenji would stare at her with wide, horrified eyes as he gets news that his overly upright daughter put herself in danger’s way to save a kid. Sounds noble, but nevertheless dangerous… and her brothers’ were abroad around Europe, her mother was off at New York; would he want to bring them altogether just for her funeral? Scary thought… scary thought indeed.
“Yeah dad… it’s me. Don’t worry, I just got held back at school for a bit; I’m supposed to be working on the Culture festival and then there was the play so… I’m sorry.” Her father knew very well she could have gotten here much earlier than nine o’clock. Instead of reprimanding Arina for her extreme tardiness he let it slide, playing the deluded dad this time. He didn’t want to find himself worrying over her all the time; Arina is a very reliable person. So what if she was late? Maybe she was doing something good for the public…as usual. The man gives his fifteen year old daughter a wry smile before signaling her toward the kitchen for dinner. She didn’t have to guess what was for supper tonight, the delicate yet strong scent of tomato sauce filled the room, tempting her to eat. Arina could feel her mouth watering, calling out to her hunger.
“Just take out the trash after we’re done eating okay? That’s your punishment for being late, alright kiddo?” he placed a warm and great hand on her head, ruffling her hair into a disarray. How could she do that to her dad? How could she just stand there and lie to him about today? She was really at the play’s rehearsal and she was working hard for the culture committee but why did she have to hold back her heroic story? Maybe she cared a little too much for her old man who was packing up on years. He treated her with honesty and integrity; she seemed to be the pinnacle of his life now that her brothers and mother were all off doing their own careers and educations.
Arina was remorseful for her actions and, in an attempt to make them both feel better she pulled her dad into a strong and loveable hug.
“Alright dad, will do.” The girl replied in a calm, content voice. It was the least she could do to make it up to him. After all, he did cook a delicious spaghetti dinner for the both of them. I owe him a lot for taking care of me like this… why do I have to lie to my dad? She rarely fibbed to her dad and when she did, it was for a good reason; even though he had the look of a well-built man for his 40’s, he had his health reserves as well. One of them included his high blood pressure and Arina didn’t need to add to his troubles. As they quietly devoured their nighttime meal, she forced herself to push away her doubts into the deep crevices of her mind. There was no time to waste on family troubles; they were all stable financially so if a health emergency were to emerge, they would get quality care.
And besides…Jay Evans was on her priority list at the moment. Integrity can take a backseat for awhile, no?

“Let me take out the trash first before I go to sleep dad!” Arina called out humorously to her father who was pushing her to go to bed. She was glad she remembered the trash or her guilty conscience wouldn’t have let her sleep tonight. As she dragged the bag behind her, she wished that she had taken some her dad’s strength instead of the majority of her mother’s beauty. Sure, she loved the fact that she rarely got stricken with acne but on situations like these when the trash bag was almost overflowing with garbage she kind of hoped to have her dad and brothers’ might. Oh well… you win some, you lose some. I lost my chance at strength. Arina declared mentally as an attempt to help her get over the slight loss. As she swung the large bag over her head and into a large trash receptacle right outside her house’s gate, her ears perked up to hear a noise.
Rustling, it had to be someone or something rustling around in the bushes. Arina’s guard increased and her eyes shifted about, scanning her surroundings with care. She wasn’t about to be a rape victim, she had a life to accomplish damn it! “Who’s there?” she inquired out loud, sounding cautious yet casual at the same time. Even if she was a wonderful actress, her fear wasn’t going to let her tap into that talent anytime soon. There it goes again, the crackle of leafs, the crunching of twigs underneath a person’s weight; her heart jumped with each noise made. Now she could tell there was someone here and Arina wasn’t going to leave with them without a fight. Eventually a climax of noise was reached and with a slight jump on her part, Arina discovered that it wasn’t a rapist but the sweet, little, innocent kid she had saved earlier.
“Hi there!” the child bubbled up, his cuteness quickly disarming Arina of her caution. His laughter took her heart away; as she approached the little boy, Arina berated herself for being a sucker to cute things…especially cute little kids. Kneeling to his level she patted his head and started to mess up his hair just like her dad would.
“Hey there dear, what’re you doing around here? It’s pretty late you know.” She didn’t want to be too harsh with the child, it was dark and no kid deserved a scolding this time of night. “I thought those nice people were going to take you to a nearby police station to find your mama?”
“But… I’m looking for someone else.” He replied, sounding pretty concerned about this person. Curious about this, Arina pressed further into the subject by asking him:
“Who’re you looking for?” That was the moment her life would change forever; normalcy was no longer welcomed into her life. With a smirk tickling the child’s mouth, he gave her the answer.
“I was looking for you, Arina-chan.” That wasn’t the voice of a child talking to her, it sounded like a guy around Jay’s age. What the hell is this…? Arina pondered in fear, frightened by the sudden change of voice. She fell over to the ground and started to crawl away from the kid who was actually starting to glow.
“Wh-what are you?!” it was the only thing her quivery, terrified voice could get into the conversation before a giant streak of lightning landed upon the abnormal toddler. As she threw her arms in front of her face, Arina managed to peek over her shields to see just what was going on. It was obviously a transformation but to what? What was this kid?
The child’s form started to warp in appearance; the lightning was acting like a sculptor. The steady stream of devastating lightning built upon the stature of this mystery person, shaping someone new. As the fierce, shimmering beam of illumination came to agree on a final form, the sparks and streaks of lightning clung onto the newly shaped man. In a shining ember of brilliance, the light faded away. There in her petrified midst stood him, the man that would change her life forever; his body was clothed by a creamy white satin shirt, all buttoned up. His legs were dressed in slightly baggy, black jean pants. She could see the glimmer of an earring hanging from his right ear.
Jingle-jangle… Jingle-jangle… went the sounds of his raven-black western boots that were lined with silver ribbon. The bells tied to the sides of his leathery shoes clashed against the soft surface, emanating that awkward, heart-pounding sound. The chime got louder… louder as he approached her with such a mischievous smile that seemed so sinister yet oh so appealing for someone like him. The glint in his eyes, something within Arina couldn’t find the strength to run and escape from him; she didn’t want to move from her spot. Entranced by his look she could only sit there in a daze as he finally reached her.
He kneeled down to her level, much like she did when he was originally a child. His eyes examined her, staring down at her thin, pale face with such an intense curiosity. He reached out a hand for her and slightly caressed her cheek, to her dismay. She shivered at his chilly touch, wanting to get away but her legs wouldn’t follow her wishes. His weird smile faded from sight and was soon replaced with a carefree grin,
“Hey Arina-chan, long time no see don’t you think?” he casually stated, removing his hand from her cheek and placing it back to his side. That’s what he wanted to do? That was all? Here she was, thinking of all the horrible things this stranger could have done and all he wanted to say was hello?! She couldn’t believe it, she wasted her time watching in horror as a child turned adult came up to her slowly and surely, giving her chills. He could have probably wanted to murder her, to take that pretty little face of hers and forcibly kiss her but no… he wanted to say hello. She got scared for nothing.
“What the hell are you?!” her kindness faded away with her fear, Arina wanted answers and this man was the only one who could offer her any solace. “Well, actually who the hell are you?! I don’t know you!” the large smile spread across his face disappeared as she said that. A look of concern overtook his visage, he was truly confused.
“You don’t remember me dear?”
“Don’t call me that you… you…” Arina was searching for the right words to say to him, but she came up with absolutely nothing. What could she say to a guy that was probably from another planet or something? Humans don’t transform into adults by getting hit with lightning! At first his expression became dark and hopeless, but soon enough he let his features soften up; a tiny smile formed on his mouth.
“Well I’m an old friend of yours Arina-chan. Do you remember me, Reiji Kuroshima?” he asked her, his face showing optimism for a positive answer. In the end she didn’t know who he was. His identity was a mystery to her memory. Although his name did actually seem to ring a few bells, his appearance didn’t match with any of her old child-hood friends… and Arina had a pretty good memory. She simply sat there in front of Reiji, looking lost and confused. Reiji’s heart sank in disappointment; he might have lost his chance to connect with Arina for good. After all, what human transforms into an adult by getting with lightning? That’s unheard of.

Overall I liked your story, although I do feel cheated. I think the reader should know how Arina saved this child’s life, we’re entitled to that. That might help the reader to understand (other than the fact he has high blood pressure)why Arina didn’t tell her father. I don’t believe that high blood, is reasonable excuse for concealing that type of information. She’s a hero, and should be proud of that. A father would be. Or give us a clear reason why she chose to keep it hidden from her father. Is he that fragile that he doesn’t like her to get out of her own shadow without permission? Which, I think is unlikely the case. And that my friend is my only complaint, of course, I do have more questions?
