Query Letter / Rudie Can't Fail (Analysis)
Dear -—---—---—-,
In the interest of being represented by your esteemed agency, I thank you for taking a moment to consider the following submission.
My 78,000-word novel is an offbeat coming of age story set on the island of Nantucket. In the tradition of Nick Hornby and Chuck Palahniuk, Rudie Can’t Fail explores contemporary morals of characters marginalized by society.
Rudie Chikauski rides home from the New Hampshire Seacoast State Parks on a mustard and Budweiser stench, tamable only by a head-to-toe purging with Estee Lauder’s Body Wash for Men and Squeaky’s ultra-sensitive luffa sponge. To his surprise, Wendy has agreed to come over. To his disappointment, she has come to end the relationship.
Heartbroken, Rudie spirals into a Nyquil and whiskey-fueled haze of self-pity. From the parking lot across the street from Wendy’s Portsmouth apartment, he concocts schemes to win her back, schemes continually foiled by quebans (people unconsciously driven by the desires of others).
In his discarded state he is left standing in the breakdown lane of Interstate 95 where he feels walking into traffic would be less painful than walking off. Mistaken for a hitchhiker, a trucker takes him to Hyannis where he finds himself on a ferry to Nantucket.
On the Island, a retired DPW worker and a Christian painter both hire and mistreat him. He endures the DPW worker and outsmarts the painter to land the contract at Our Island Home, the island rest home and treatment facility.
Inside the Home, he falls for Jule, the ‘Laundress’ who, along with the residents, helps him see a world beyond himself. Outside the Home, he encounters rival painters, bonfires, serious crunchers (waves), and a man who sees something in Rudie others do not and offers him a golden opportunity on another island, Manhattan.
Reality takes on illusion in a twisted conclusion. Jule’s illness complicates her decision. Will she leave her troubled husband and begin again with Rudie? The death of Rudie’s father complicates his. Will he leave Jule and follow the opportunity of a lifetime?
As for me, I hold a degree in Creative Writing from MCLA and although Rudie Can’t Fail is my first novel, my writing experience ranges from short stories and poetry to song lyrics for my band. In addition, a second novel is well under way, as is an outline for a third.
I would be happy to send you a complete copy of the manuscript for your review. Thank you for your valuable time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Unfortunately, this query would not make me want to read the story, sorry. It seems a little boring in it’s state.
Find the better parts of your story to include here. Give more insight into the meat of the story, don’t just explain how he gets from point a to point b.
