Journal, Diary, & Blogging / What is normal? (Analysis)

WHAT IS NORMAL?

Society has labeled me mentally unwell.

WHY?

Define Normal?
The dictionary definition is: conforming to what is standard or usual; free from mental or emotional disorders.

Have you met anyone that fits this definition?

Studies have shown that ‘life’ can and will cause depression.

Has anyone experienced life?

I sing loudly whilst out walking.
Am I mad? Or just exuberant?

We are conditioned to suppress emotions.
What if you cannot?

There are a lot of reasons to cry – like war.
Society states war is normal.

The perimeters for what is normal are narrowing as more and more mental illnesses are discovered.
In other words society dictates what is normal.

Is psychiatry an agent of social control?

Being abnormal allows me to converse into different realities:
When I was a child I would speak to the people others cannot see. It was acceptable, cute and showed a healthy imagination.

As an adult if I speak to the people you cannot see I am abnormal.

Just because you cannot see or hear them, does that mean they are not there?

Carl Jung, went through a stage of confessed madness, he embraced it and wrote his collected works ‘Dreams, Visions and Reflections.’ He saw knights from the crusades and talked to them. This man is one of my most respected peers.
Is he normal?

Most people take drugs to get high.
That is considered normal.

I take prescribed drugs to stop being high.
That is considered abnormal.

Off medication I am a spontaneous child that wants to run, skip, jump, sing, be loud, be happy and abnormal.

Society deems itself fit to judge.
I judge society. I am abnormally normal.

I completely and totally agree with you…I freaking love this piece. It is definitely very bold and in your face. Society really does define what normal is…it tries to define everything acceptable…some things are good to define but others are just a way to break people down. Like they say if you follow the sheep you will step in their shit. I like to keep my shoes clean.

i thought the writing style suited the piece. i am a fan of styles that are different. this was a good way to express these types of thoughts. as to my conclusion on the topic, i think the standard is whether you are happy, not how society, which is comprised mostly of conformists, views you. but i know sometimes that happiness comes at too high a price. there is the downside, isn’t there? we who do not wish to conform must find our own place, and that sometimes seems an impossible task.

This piece is very thought provoking and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I especially liked this part- ” I sing loudly whilst out walking.
Am I mad? Or just exuberant?” Personally, I believe that there is no such thing as normal.

I can relate to every thing you wrote. I am mentally unwell also. I could really feel this emotion behind the questions in your piece.

Normal is often just a stastical term now. Something that is stastically abnormal just doesnt occur as often. It’s called “deviance” but I personally think it’s a load of bull.
The most brilliant minds are never normal.

Interesting read. Considering it’s a Journal/Diary/Blog, grammar isn’t really a worry. Nothing really to get pendantic about.

The writing style flits from one point to another, which although does reflect the topic you are writing about, doesn’t engage the reader as much as it might do. If you expanded your points a little more, it would sound less like a list, and become more persuasive, to my way of thinking at least. An example of where this is possible is with:

‘Have you met anyone that fits this definition?

Studies have shown that ‘life’ can and will cause depression.’

Apart from that, spelling, grammar and everything else seem pretty good.

And one of my favourite quotes to finish:

‘Suppose, then, that all men were sick or deranged, save one or two of them who were healthy and of right mind. It would then be the latter two who would be thought to be sick and deranged and the former not! (Aristotle)’

Well done.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. I just started college and am surrounded by the same cliques and “social norms” that I have seen all my life only on a grander scale. Your use of an untraditional sentence structure helps to drive home your point and I applaud you for it.

Well said, and with a few more examples from history to go along with Jung, this could be an informative and provocative article.

Normality is a construct of a particular society, so you could research other societies (other than Western) to show just how subjective “normality” is.

As this is a journal/blog entry, I can’t find fault with its format. That said, my main criticism is that the individual thoughts need more development. Ex. “Studies have shown that life causes depression.” Statements like these could be full paragraphs full of information rather than bare statements.

Wow! Good job on this piece. I admire its brevity, as I am one who often errs on the side of the verbose.

I am not normal, and am very damn well proud of it! :)

subjective terms will always lead to said contradictions and oddities when observing examples all over the spectrum. what you’re asking is talked about a lot (from conversations i’ve had at least). hell, if you want to widen your audience question religious prayer as talking to beings the prayeree can’t see but still talks to as something that’s normal but the same as what carl jung did.
