I checked my work email for the productivity report but instead found a number of emails all concerning the recent death of a friend. She had died of a cancer this past weekend. Thoughts raced suddenly to my heart and I naturally wanted to dedicate something poetic. I wanted to say that memories of her kindness cast circles and circles and rings of oceanic ripples rowing through my suddenly startled mind. I wanted to say that since she’d left, the sky had moaned in sorrow, turned its head and let its silver, watery strands of hair wash our hearts with a grieving tenderness. But what I needed to say was simple—she’d left this life a good person.

This is sad. Personal and sad. Excellent. The use of ordinary events heightens its reality.
