I woke this morning to a wet and supple sky. Sitting in the driveway for a morning cigarette, I’d seen a vagabond heron pierce the air up high and carry under its wind-surfing belly an ominous piece of the sky’s gloom. The rainfall eased my mind as I began to think about my grim and yellow past. I laid my naked back on the concrete earth to look aimless into the fields of cloud and asked why life was designed to be so unlivable. Alone with my question left unanswered, I tossed my burning cigarette to the pavement, hopped in the Blazer and drove off disquieted by the creep-eerie morning.
