Poetry / Feeling June Cleaveresque (Analysis)
Makig preparations for a trip across the sky
emptying out the contents of a purse
inexplicable contents pour forth
gadgetry of womanhood
two types of lipstick, a third tube of chapstick
a compact of powder makeup
no less than four hair ties
6 clipies to tame wandering strands
three earings
a myriad of reciepts
a pen
an andes mint wrapper, folded tightly around discarded gum
and fifteen member cards
proclaiming membership to organizations that should not require memberdom
a lone piece of peppermint falls out and rolls morosely across the floor
when did i commit to this cult?
from tom-boy blue to powder-puff pink
when did i convert to a, for lack of a better term,
a female
he says there's a secret organization among us
he calls it "the ruin your life society"
he says we meet on wednesdays
discuss diabolic plots to ruin men's lives
most often involving nagging, burning the dinner on purpose,
and gasp! interupting the big game
is it true?
am I ruining his life?
I think maybe he's ruining mine
making me into this June Cleaver-type
or is he really the one to blame?
What does it mean for me?
Am i now a drone?
A honey bee, buzzing in the language of my hive
and who is the queen bee of my life?
the most frightening question of all
Barbie, Ms. Hilton, Ms. Jameson
or even the Evil One Herself
Mrs. Martha Stuart
Are any one of them the queen?
My queen
I shudder.

First off, this is rough but interesting. Then there are three castes of honey bees, the reproductive female (the queen) males (drones) and nonreproductive females (workers) so the narrator can’t be a drone, she’s a worker bee. June Cleaver was the ultimate 50’s woman ideal, a stay at-home perfect wife and mother and the narrator doesn’t seem to be or identify being such at all. The point here I think is how and when does one become a girly girl or woman and who does she look up to as her heroine or ego ideal. What does the laundry list of a purse’s contents have to do with failing or ruining men’s lives? Many issues are brought up in this poem but they are not as yet thought out completely, goes in too many directions as yet. I would suggest honing in on aspect or issue and stick with it. What is pro-feminism to the author? One would have to define it and take a stand one way or the other. Too general yet. Hardly Barbie or Paris Hilton represent the goals feminism have worked for. And Martha Stuart perpetrates all that is unholy! :) Would love to read a revise of this as many good issues are brought up. Good writing to you.
