Short Story / Last Apocalypse (Analysis)

Last Apocalypse

STORM…
Spiders’ legs arose and fell to the changing lies of mankind’s dreams. Jaw bones cracked, and teeth shattered, to the impact of what it meant to be alive. Evil had never smiled so wide. Illuminated eyes never flashed so brightly to faces screaming as lurching torsos smoldered. Raw fingertips clung to bleeding lips, and mangled toes dug into the devil’s chin. I watched and wondered once again.
Rolling wicked eyes and gasoline wars, rockets exploding on foreign shores, children crying out as parents vanished into blood-splattered mist…unkissed. Machine guns fired bright orange bursts, triggered by politically ordered warriors that shouted commands to the earth…data files of agonies listening to and utilizing our fears…over so many blinding years.
Sticky tastes of us… swallowed and digested into steaming hot guts. Completely unsatisfied, his stomach twisted of hungers and lusts. Saliva gushed over jagged teeth that ground together upon bones. Where did he find us? What did we not see? And darkness over came the boiling seas.
His laughter engulfed our brains as infants went insane to the shrieks of our falling bombs. Blood-soaked rats shrank and withered as tiny pointed teeth pulled at living flesh. Our time had loved on his deceptive kiss as bodies fell from scooping fingers and a clenching fist, like wads of frazzled cash. Our blood squished from smiling black lips, our limbs sticking from the cracks of his teeth. All the while we believed in logic and had faith in holy bliss.
Lost stars and fire flies faded from dimming eyes as worn shoes shredded from our feet.
And I heard positive thinkers speak through air waves to the world.
“Rise,” they said…“Rise.”
I stood watching as his steps thundered over mountainsides, his bony skull concealing all he chose to hide.
Newscasters primped their hair to Channel Death… projecting for those who didn’t believe that the fire had reached the shores yet. It was far more than me. It was far beyond what I had ever seen. He walked the earth and approached me as oak trees burned below his knees.
“Tell them,” he said to me, a solitary man at the mercy of his crushing step.
“Tell them that in me lay the answer to their great divide…” as partially chewed remnants of the populous fell lifeless from cracked lips, “…that I alone am the result of them. I am the severed flaws of their creations.”
“Tell who?” I asked, my sullen face lit by fiery light as I awaited my death.
“We will all be dead soon!”
He coughed and spat sharp bones across the lightless sky… atomic mushroom clouds exploding from his heartless eyes.
Again I replied… “Without us and our selfishness, you cannot exist.” I stared upward from far beneath searing optical blasts. “…but if you are the face of all our flaws, they will not listen.”
“Tell them to open their eyes and see me….and I shall die,” he said as black smoke and fire flowed from the rims of each eye. He tightened his grip as meat split through skin. Human rib cages cracked…to bulging colored eyes...
and he grinned. “They are why I hate, yet they will not accept the truth of me...so I will crush them into eternity with all they have become.”
Steaming red tears rolled from melting eyes as jet engines rumbled under focused pilots and smoke-filled skies. Red hot commuter jets crashed into building sides. Tortured souls choked then leaped to their deaths. Presidents gambled and tripled their debts.
“Tell them that I am the lies!” he screamed and slammed his giant fist against the earth, causing grassy ground to split. A jagged crack raced through earth to my feet and stopped as he flexed every muscle for everything he was not worth. “God did not create me? Their leaders, and naivety, are the reasons I survive!”
Guided missiles exploded on his head, and he smacked fighter jets to the ground. Chaos gathered around me as I stood before him and quietly frowned. Human heads popped beneath his toes as soil, bone and rocks were pushed into heaping piles. Of all the people on earth that were upside down… I had the only smile.
I never moved from my place as I watched his angry face. Humans dangled from his lips as they willingly climbed through ragged holes of his rotting cheeks. His decay overcame them, and he swallowed each and every one.
“You are the ultimate plight of man,” I shouted. “You are the eyes and the nose of that which we cannot place. You are the face!”
“I am the volts in the lightening…the force behind the storm. Tell them I don’t wish to be here… that I am the convicted angel of conspiracies…that I was cast down for refusing to lie…my holy existence threatened…a false image given to their eyes. As their hate will see…it is leaders who have created me.”
“They will not listen!” I said, “I have tried, but I am no one. There are deceived and banish me to the sides. It is they who cannot see the lies. Now they die.”
He inflated his mounding chest, arched his back and screamed into the polluted sky.
“Fools,” he growled and reluctantly stomped heads that ejected bugging eyes
“Blind fools!”
…but who was I?

I definitely enjoyed this piece. The rhyme that continues through the entire thing is very well used. It was a little bit difficult to follow sometimes but that is to be expected from an abstract piece like this I suppose. I think this would be better labeled as a poem than a short story though. There were no major mistakes that stuck out as I read it so I won’t try to dig for any. Good work.
