Poetry / Where I'm from (Analysis)
where Im from
Im from faded jeans and red caps
hoods and savage kicks
from banana seats and dirt roads, just before eight hours of stars
I am from pine trees holding memory of a fall we cant forget
that sticky sap stays put
I am from hard work and playin even harder
the way we used to at the lake
Im from the hurry-ups and the lets-take-it-easies
from harsh truth that always ends with soft spoken words
Im from total awareness of fake and reality
from burning black top and the never-let-the-beat-stops
from grandmas apple pie and milky cocoa
Im from sweet tea and a fuzzy peach
juice dribbling off my chin
from no hesitation and no excuses
Im from that bloody nose I got when I was 5
got the wild streak early by taking my trike down an epic slope
I am from a generation of change,
we may be media hungry and materialistic, but clearly vital for our society to advance
I am from that block with an apple sign
from a school that grooves and flows
while division goes underground
separation seeps into the halls unnoticed
its happenin on all sides
can you see it

Wow, this is so lovely! I wasn’t expecting this when I opened it up, since I’ve been reading bad poetry all morning. There’s so many great lines here, so much see and feel and almost even taste. My only critique would be to play around with the last stanza, because the second line there (“we may be media hungry…”) feels a little clunky and cliche. But the idea is great and I look forward to seeing further drafts.
