La Petite Mort
The little death
Enraptures me
It takes control
Yet sets me free
Please- do not fear
The little death
Which feeds the soul
Yet steals the breath
And if I could
I’d share with you
The little death
Known by so few
It happens.
It is an ordinary book, poem, article, line of dialogue in a film- suddenly transformed into something much more than one could ever have expected. In truth, probably more than the author intended, or envisioned.
Personal interpretation.
Seated in an armchair, or perhaps curled up in bed with your favorite blanky and beverage of choice, inner vision suddenly shifts-perception is turned inside out- or outside in. A change that arrives with a word, a sentence, a thought-feeling-idea. It leaps off the page or screen, and lodges itself firmly into your psyche. “Yes, yes! I recognize that, I have done-felt-thought the same!”
You thought you were the only one. And now? You are not alone. It is not a guest, arriving with a bottle of wine, and leaving just when you thought you could not stand another minute of its company. It is a permanent boarder, a new resident in your very soul.
It is La Petite Mort-The Little Death- that moment which steals the breath, halts the heart.
Oh, you won’t die from it. But you may change. And if it happens again, you may change yet again. It is one of life’s few true pleasures with its astounding effect on the person, entire.
I wish it upon you, The Little Death.
It happens.

Wow. I always thought petite mort was the French colloquial term for an orgasm. I know that feeling. I mean the one when you find someone else has had the same idea that you have had. A couple of times . . . anyway. this was well written.
