Poetry / Making Promises (Analysis)
Making Promises
I told you that I would,
I didn't.
I promised that I would never forget,
I did.
I swore with my whole heart that I would love you,
I'm still trying to do that.
Yet, for all the promises You have made to me.
You have honored every one.
You have never forgotten a jot, nor a tittle.
You promised me joy,
I was filled.
You promised me peace,
I am free.
You promised me Eternal Life,
And I know that you will grant it, when I deserve it.
You made us a promise long ago,
And though we have long forgotten,
You will bless every soul,
You will remember and love,
Every one, whether below or above,
For though we break, and desecrate
The solemn vows we did take,
Thy children, Thou wilt never forsake.
In grandest mercy, didst Thou send,
The greatest gift, that hath no end.
With bittersweet news our hearts do burst,
Thy noblest, Thy Beloved,
Went down to the Earth.
Knowing beginning to end,
He chose to do well,
Being the True Friend,
He saved us from Hell.
Like the wool of a lamb,
When slaughtered doth stain,
Red with life leaving,
its mortal frame.
For thus was He stained,
But not with His own,
For it was our blood, He bore,
For us He atoned.
And so it was kept,
The promise of Old.
But we, promise breakers,
Whose hearts do grow cold,
Can never forget that promise we made,
yes promised, that we will not,
no cannot,
return 'till our debt be paid.
His promises He'll keep,
Let us then not forget,
With courage to live right,
So that we will not regret.
