Poetry / Icarus
Icarus
icarus
did your eyes
turn wide
and desperate
with the
stilling of your heart
with the naive
realization
of your mortality
as your wings burned
to wax
no longer a force
beyond your own
humble earth
as the clouds looked on
above
light and apathetic
as the sun burned
with loss
having only wanted
in that brief moment
to reach out and touch
your golden skin
your wings that had both
defied her
and finally ended
abruptly the silent
longing
that had
heavy
filled her belly
icarus
did your eyes
turn wide
learning
of your humanity
or learning of hers
as you fell
in a heart pounding
breathless
second
to the silence
to the sweet
wounded
mouth
of the sea

Oh, yes! Stark, beautiful and love the mythology. I, too, have always loved the tale of Icarus. The flow and ryhthm of this piece is crafted exceptionally well. I usually do not advocate for one work lines, but they work nicely here. The images and the direct address are amazing. Your ending is my favorite part: “the sweet/wounded/mouth/of the sea.” I am very impressed with this poem and definitely look forward to reading more of your stuff. GREAT Job, especially for such a young poet!
