Poetry / Black and White
She is black, I am white.
She is tough, I am strong.
Can I understand her experiences? NO!
Can I acknowledge her oppressions? YES!
But I am white and she is black,
Our cultures worlds apart.
I can’t walk in her shoes nor can she walk in mine.
I am tough, she is strong.
Can she understand my experiences; NO!
Can she acknowledge my oppressions; YES!
But she is black and I am white,
Our cultures worlds apart.
She can’t walk in my shoes; nor can I walk in hers.
Brought together by our sameness
Divided by our differences.
Unique and common
Outward and inward.
Finding strength in our unity,
Finding weakness in our disparity.
We are the same; yet different.
Our experiences common; yet unique.
It doesn’t matter what color we are.
For we are both women, brought together by our gender,
Held together by our strength.
For I am white and she is black
Our courage makes us stronger.

The poem is as elementary as, well as black and white. It caught my attention because I am black and I wanted to know the other perspective. The last stanza I would have divided the line second line and made it two lines. I did like the sentiment that we are different yet alike.
