Lyrics / yankee girl
I swore to grandad
That’d I’d never leave the southland
Never scrape my boots in a big yankee town
But it’s strange how it happened
I guess the civil war ended
And there’s a yankee girl got me tangled around
So I’m bookin flights to New York
Hope they don’t expect me to eat with a fork
And I hope there’s somewhere up there to buy a beer
And I’m takin a train to Vermont
Creeping like a catamount
An get off that train and see her again
On the banks of that river
Is where we talked together
And she spoke of all those strange yankee ways
Over moonshine drinks
Her bare feet in the creek
It was June 21
The year’s longest day
I tasted corn liqour in her mouth
And turned my truck south
Drivin into town as the day faded away
And she is a vegan
Something I can’t understand
So we ate some good Mexican
And all I could do was smile.
