BY: O’Rama Antoine

In Turning Upside Down a girl named Kerry struggles with her childhood she had been a victim of abuse from her mother, Susan Lee. Her mother drank until she felt no emotions, soon goes mad and Kerry is left alone to face the world. Her mom later commit suicide and Kerry get adopted when she is 13. Her new mother was Man-chew Mai. It was just them and the world. They get better knowledge about each other and become best friends. On that same night when all the happiness filled the air pain and sorrow would draw it out.

Susan: Wake up sweetie pie. I made you some Lunch. (Smiling and tickling her)

Kerry: Mom. Can you stay home with me? (Puppy dog eyes)

Susan: You know I can’t if I don’t go to work today I won’t be able to put dinner on the table. (Kneeling down to her)

Kerry: Okay Mama. Love you.
(Squeezing her hand)

Susan: I know. (Tilting her head to the side and bringing it up quickly with a smile) Well, go on and eat.

Kerry: Thank you mom for Lunch. Work hard okay.

Susan: I will. I know you’re a big girl so I will leave you here. Bye. (Smiling)

Susan goes to work and goes to her section of the stage and starts striping

Some man with a lot of hair: Get lower baby. Shack it up and down and twirl it all around. Just tease me. Take it off!

Susan: Shut up you drunk. (She murmured and smiled)

Some man with a lot of hair: Hay baby! Shake it! Shake it! (Jumping the table and smacking her but)

Susan: Don’t touch me. (Smacking him)

Some man with a lot of hair: Yeah baby hurt me. (Giggling)

Susan: That’s it! (The manager comes out; she gets off the stage and goes to him) Ronnie, this man was all up on me. I didn’t bargain for this. Do something about this!

Ronnie walks up to the man.

Some man with a lot of hair: Oh. Common! Common!! (Leaves angrily)

Susan: Jerk. Thanks Ronnie.

Ronnie: Yup. No problem. (Leaves to his office)

Goes outside and takes a smoke and sees her friend Julie.

Susan: Oh.. Hi Julie.

Julie: What’s going on?

Susan: Huh…  Some fat drunken jerk came on my stage and smacked my ass. I could have taken his intentions verbally, but he crossed the line. But.. Ronnie took care of it.

Julie: I’ve been there. (They both laughed) You coming in? No… My shift is over. I’m going home to my baby, girl.

Susan walks up to her car and some men are whistling at her but she ignores it and get into her car.

Susan: Those jerks! (Punching on he steering wheel) I can’t believe how men act towards some stranger when they probably have wives and kids at home to take care of. It’s my fault I took this crummy job anyway. I knew what I was getting myself in. I did a good thing I guess. It was the only way I could manage to put food on my table. Kerry’s the only reason why I’m living. (Crying,) I quit.

She finally gets to the house

Susan: I’m home baby. (Hiding the tears with a smile)

Kerry: Mama. Did you try your greatest today? (Hugging her)

Susan: No honey, I quit the job. I’m sorry.  (Kneeling down to see her eyes)

Kerry: But mom, you told me that this job was helping you put money on the table and now…. What are we going to do?

Susan: It’s all right. (Holding on to her)

She goes to her room and sits on her bed crying and then opens a cabinet on the right of her bed. She then pulls out a big bottle of whisky and guzzles it down.

Susan: I can’t believe I’m doing this to myself. (Stop drinking)

Kerry: Hi. Mom I wanted to see if you were all right. (Looking at her eyes)

Susan: Get out. You can’t see me like this. (Crying and walking towards Kerry)

Kerry: I won’t leave you here alone mom. You can’t—

Susan: Get out! (Kerry jumps) I’m telling you. This is the last time. (Kerry doesn’t budge) I told you. (She smacked Kerry then Kerry ran to her room and cried)
I can’t believe I did that.  She’s going to hate me. A mother shouldn’t hit their child. I think I’ll go to her room and tell her why I’m acting this way. (Starting to weep and drank more then passes out in her room)

In Kerry’s room

Kerry: Why was she yelling at me? Am I that annoying? All I wanted to do was comfort her, but she pushed me away…(Sniffing and then cries herself to sleep)

Next morning:

Kerry walks into Susan’s room to find her wide awake and mute.

Susan: From this day on I swear to myself not to do anything that will hurt my baby including talking. (Thinking out loud)

Kerry: Mama. Are you okay? (Worried eye’s)

Susan: Yes, I’m find honey. I love you. (She nodes for yes)

Kerry: Don’t worry mama, I’ll take care of you. (Started brushing her hair) You look beautiful mom.

Susan: I know I am, but I can take care of myself, just go.

Kerry: Let me put some cool clothes on you. (Smiling)

Susan: I don’t need clothes. Leave me alone. I don’t want to hurt you again. (Shook her head no and started crying)

Kerry: What’s wrong? I know you want some time alone. Remember my birthday tomorrow. (She left the room)

Susan: I know she will never stop treating me like this because I made an oath that I have to keep. (Going towards the lower cabinet on the right side of her be for sleeping pills) I’m going to tike eight sleeping pill and grind them. Then put them into my whisky bottle to drink for my daughter’s better future. (She wrote a letter to Kerry)

When she finished writing it, she drank the drugged whisky and started squirming.

Susan: Goodbye my darling. (Permanently falling asleep)

Next morning Kerry wakes up to find her mother still sleeping.

Kerry: Mama, wake up. (Smiling) You sleepy head. Let’s start a new exciting day, mom… (Said sadly shacking her up hard) Mom! Mama! (Crying and running to the phone) 9-1-1. Hello, Hello. My mom is dead I think, please help me, I’m alone. (Screeching and crying)

Paramedic’s guy: Stay calm honey. We’ll be there soon.

Kerry: Not, soon! Now! Come now! (Crying hysterically hangs up the phone) How did this happen… (Stuttering and falling to the floor) I have to get up and go to my mother. (Walking to her Susan’s room and getting on her bead. Then puts her arms around her) I love you mama. (A teardrop falls on Susan’s face and then Kerry kisses her on her cheeks) The Paramedics are coming soon. You’ll be all right. (Stroking her hair)

Paramedic’s 1: Open the door. (Knocking on the door) It’s the paramedics. (Kerry jumps up)

Kerry: She’s here, she’s here. (Running to the door and opening it)

Paramedic’s 2: Which room is she in? (Serious looking)

Kerry: In the second room, hurry. (Looking rushed)

Paramedic’s 3: She’s not breathing. (Touching her risk) It appears that she died yesterday night. (Kerry starts to cry) I’m sorry honey. Oh. What’s this? There’s some type of powder on this table. (Tastes it) There’s the answer to my question. (Picking up the bottle of sleeping pills with a bottle of whisky) The mystery has been solved. Bad news honey…

Kerry: What?

Paramedic’s 3: Your mom committed suicide. (Looking at Kerry) How old is your mom and what is her name?

Kerry:  26 years old. And her name is Susan. (Crying)

Paramedic’s 3: How old are you?

Kerry: I just turn 9 today. (She looked at him with weary eyes)

Paramedic’s 3: Okay. Listen you want a hug? (Opening his arms)

Kerry: No. Just leave me alone. (Protectively standing next to her mother)

Paramedic’s 3: Well then I will have to take you away now. Step aside. (Trying to get by her)

Kerry: No! I have to have my time alone with her first. I have to say goodbye. (Turning to her mother) Mama. I don’t know why you did this to yourself. (Sniffing) I was going to take good care of you. You’ll be in my heart always. Now listen. These guys will come get you and put you somewhere nice. Goodbye mama. (Puts her head on Susan’s stomach)

Paramedic’s 3: Okay… We have to take her. Stay here, the police are coming to take you to foster care. (Walking to the door to close it)

Kerry: Mom… I’m going to fix your bed before the police comes to get me. (She walks to her room and cleans the right side of her bed and then the left side) Uh… What’s this? (She picks up a note) It’s from mama, she wrote it yesterday?
(She whispered to herself then starts reading it out loud)
Dear, Kerry

I’ve been acting weird in these past days. I wish you a happy birthday. You’ve been a great daughter, but I believe I’ve been a terrible mother. I quit my job at the strip club. This is the first time I’m ever telling you where I work. You must be ashamed of me. I started to get irritated by everything you did because I was stressed that I didn’t have money to provide you with and I didn’t want to use my emergency money. For this reason, I drank some juice that would make me sleep forever. I’m doing this because I want you to have a better family, to be happy and grow successfully in your life. I didn’t want to hurt you anymore. I love you baby.

Eternal love
—Mommy

Ps. There is 20,000 dollars under my mattress. Use it for my funeral and my barrel. There is a ring in there that has been passed down generation to generation and it is now yours. Happy birthday, I love you. Bye.  (Kerry tries and hold her tears back)

I have to get mom’s phone book to call Aunt Linda. Okay… Here it is 345-4326. (Phone is ringing)

Linda: Hello.

Kerry: Aunt Linda, Try to be calm when I say this. Well, mama is dead, and she committed suicide.

Linda: Uh! My sister, dead God! Susan… (Kerry hears her crying)

Kerry: Aunt Linda calm down. I need all your help. I need you to organize the funeral, burial and the people coming.

Linda: Why must I do all of that. I will need help. (Her voice shivering)

Kerry: I can’t help you. I’m too young and the police will be here any minute now to put me in foster care. (Keeping herself from crying)

Linda: Okay. I’ll do it. I’ll do it. Bye. (Hanging up)

Police: Open the door, it’s the police.

Kerry: I can’t go now. I have to give my aunt some stuff.

Police officer 1: What stuff kid?

Kerry: Well, my mom wrote me a note about how she has emergency money that should be spent on her death. Since I cant take care of where she is barred and all I want my aunt to take care of it. Can you please drive me to her house? (Shivering voice)

Policeman 1: Where does she live?

Kerry: She lives three houses down from me.

Policeman 1: Yes I can do that for you. Let’s go.

Kerry: Puts the ring on and grabs the suite case and gets into the car. (Satisfied) We’re here. (Walking up to her door and knocking)

Linda: I’m coming. (Screeching at the end of coming and opens the door)

Kerry: Here is what you need to take care of business. You might not see me again so give me a hug please. (Handing her the suite case and hugging her)

Linda: Thank you. Honey. Goodbye. (Smiling with grief in her face)

Kerry: I have to go now. Take care, Auntie Linda and take good care of Uncle Bert. (Smiling)

Policeman 1: Come on sweets. Let’s go.
(Grabbing her arm calmly)
We’re going to drop you off with a few other kids. Don’t worry you won’t be alone.

Kerry: No! (Lifted her hands up quickly) Please. (Now crying) I just want to be with my mother. If I can’t have her I’d rather be alone! (She said quickly in a low tone, trying to get away)

Policeman 1: Come back here! (Grabbing her and pushing her in the car) This is for the best kid. (Picking her up so she can put less of a fight)

Kerry: Are those kids going to hurt me? (Wiping her nose)

Policeman 1: No… (Said calmly) Of course they won’t. I will see that they don’t.

Kerry: Okay. (Falling asleep)

Policeman 1: That kid put up some fight. (Smiling at policeman 2)

Policeman 2: Yeah. We have to see that this kid is not right about kids hurting her. (Looking worried)

Policeman 1: Okay, I have to wake her up now… (Shacking her gently)

Kerry: We’re here… (Looking messy)

Policeman 1: Let’s go and meet some new people. (Holding her hand)

Then go in to the woman in charge of the whole program.

Margaret: Welcome. If I may ask, what is this young lady’s name? (Looking up beat)

Kerry: Hi… My name is Kerry. (She said with is a sigh) These guys forced me in the here, there the police. I bet you noticed.

Margaret: Well then. (Brushing what Kerry said off with short laughter) Each room is assigned a councilor and yours is Samuel Fern. Meet the people in the conference room and you will be staying with them in room #5:

Nell: Hello, my name is Nell Lock.

Catres: I am Catres Cartaleanie.

Jan: My name is Jan I. Keen.

Manny: Hey, I’m Mannt Cathar.

Jean: My name is Jean Clove.

Antoinette: Antoinette Scott.

Heather: I am Heather Manter.

Loren: Hello. I’m Loren Anderson.

Mitch: Hey, Mitch Walters.

Sandy: Sandy Wilcott, hi.

Donny: Welcome, I’m Donny Rivers.

Sciler: Hello my name is Sciler Detront.

Margaret: Kerry why don’t you go in that room with then and talk. (Tilting her head to the left)

Kerry goes into the room and sits down.

Loren: So what brings you her? Tell us your story?

Kerry: I’m sorry but I forgot your name. Also I will not tell my story unless all of you tell yours.

Loren: I am Loren and I think I could speak for everyone, they will tell their stories.
(Looking serious like she’s about to hurt someone)

Kerry: Okay, I’ll start. The times I spent with my mother were great. I stayed at my house alone every time she went to work. Until one day when she came home and was sad, she worked at a strip club and she was tiered of the people treating her like an object so she quit. To make the story short… She committed suicide. My dad ran away from us a long time ago. So they took me here. That’s it. (She held her tears back the whole time) Here I am now 9 year old.

Loren: What was your mom’s name?

Kerry: Susan Lee.

Loren: We didn’t agree to tell long stories so make um short and simple I’ll start now.
(Smiling) I am 12 years old, my mother and father would beat me. One day I call the police on them. That was two years ago.

Nell: I was left at home for week and then I had a party and the police came. Then they put an end to my party. They asked me where my parents were and I said that I didn’t know. The story answers it’s self. Oh yeah, I’m 13.  This happened 2 years ago. (Her feet up on the chair)

Catres: My mom died and after she died my dad forced me to do some sexual stuff with him. This was 3 years ago and now I am 11. (Looking confused and irritable)

Jan: My mom killed my dad then killed herself while I dialed 9-1-1. This was 4 months ago and I am 8 years old.

Manny: My dad stabbed me in the stomach when I told him he was a bad father and husband. That was a year ago and I and 14 years old. (Looking sorry but angry)

Jean: Through the ages 3-5, I was sexually harassed by my mom and dad. That was two years ago and I am 10 years old. (Fidgeting)

Antoinette: I kept running away when I was 12 and now I am 12. It was just a month ago. (Smiling)

Heather: My mom was a burglar, she went into peoples homes and took jewelry and sold them. She said it was for the best job. Then she was caught and here I am. That was over 3 years ago, and I am 10 now. (Her arm spacing out)

Mitch: My mom and dad gambled, so much we lost the house and they couldn’t take care of me. That was a week ago and I am 10. (Looking sad)

Sandy: I was left on some woman’s porch when I was 2 months old and I had serious medical issues. I am 9 yeas old now. (Looking babbled)

Donny: My house went up in flames, I warned my mom and dad but they told me to get out of the house. They were behind me until my mom fell then my dad helped her up. I wanted to help too but my dad said no. I walked closer to her and dad but part of the sealing fell on them. The only thing I heard was: “Go.”  That was just three days ago and I am 12.

Sciler: My dad died when I was a baby so I just had a mom. She couldn’t take care of me so, well so she took up being a hooker. She lasted up until I was 10. A month before my birthday she was killed. That happened last month and I am 10.

Loren: We’ve all been adopted except for: Sciler, Donny, Mitch, Antoinette, and Jan. Anyway, the people who adopted us were scum, so we ended up here again. It seems like all the babies are popular.

Kerry: I can’t believe there are people like me. Where is my room?

Nell: Sorry, kid but there is no such thing as your room. The question you should ask is: who am I sharing a room with? (Evil smirk)

Kerry: Fine, who am I sharing a room with? (Looking angered)

Nell: To start, you will be sharing a room with Loren, and Heather, Antoinette, and me. (Smiling)

Kerry: Great, I’m living with Ms. Talk a lot, Ms. Spaced out, Ms. Quite, and Ms. Know it all.
(She whispered to herself)

Nell: Let me escort you to our room. People who are under 11 should go to sleep at 8:30 p.m. People who are 11 up sleep at 10:00 p.m. You know what that means…

Kerry: I know… I have to sleep now because it’s pasts 8:30. (Bunching up her fists)

Nell: Right…(Laughing and pointing to her bed) Bring Heather with you.

Kerry: That dumb blond. (Tossing in her bed in frustration)

Heather: I know how you feel. She acted like that when I came too but I don’t really talk to her. (Staring at the sealing)

Kerry: So she probably did it to all the young ones? (Looking at her hands)

Heather: Yeah. (Then she spaced out and then jumped)

Kerry: What’s wrong? (Getting out of her bead looking at Heather)

Heather: Sometimes I space out and then I jump because I am seeing something bad, like if I were stranded on an Island with no food and then ding slowly. (Eyes watering)

Kerry: Don’t think like that. You’re here now and safe. Look at me I thought that you guys would eat me up alive but its just Nell who has it out for me. (Looking at Heather’s face sadly)

Heather: Don’t feel sorry for me—Get in your bed they’re coming. (Closing her eyes)

Kerry: I heard them talking about me. (Smiling)

Heather: Get on your bed and pretend to sleep. (Closing her eyes but hearing everything)

It is now 10:00 and Kerry still isn’t asleep.

Nell: That new girl, what’s her name? (Her hands shacking)

Loren: Kerry Lee.

Nell: Yeah… Right… I don’t think that girl is right. She has some mouth on her. (Has an ugly expression) What do you think Antoinette?

Antoinette: She’s all right… (Looking down)

Nell: Okay? (Looking irritated) You girls need to lighten up so, have any boy friends? I’ll answer first. I have one but he’s back at home. (Reminiscing with a smile)

Antoinette: No… (She said low looking shameful)

Loren: No! I don’t intend to. (Looking mad)

Nell: What’s wrong with you? (Looking at her like she’s crazy)

Loren: Just because we don’t have a boyfriend doesn’t mean where no bodies or we have no life. (Speaking louder in a low fashion)

Nell: Fine. I’ll be definitely leaving you alone. (Rolling her eyes away from Loren walking to her bed)

Loren: Witch! (She said under her breath, getting on her bed)

Next day:

Margaret: Wake! Everyone get up! (Going room to room)

Kerry: Wake up everybody, she close to our room. (Everyone still sleeps except for Heather) At least your listening to me Heather. (Looking down)

Margaret: Wake up – Well, I am surprised you two are up. For this you’ll get a reword while your roommates do what the normally do every day. (Smiling and then changing to a serious face) Wake up! (Loren, Nell, and Antoinette jumps up out of bed) Okay I have you attention. When you finish coming back to life, and after you clean your room, you will be able to go outside and play ball. (Walking out the room) Come with me Kerry and Heather)

Nell: What did those kids do? (Smiling, fixing her bed. Then she goes to the bathroom brushing her teeth)

Loren: Hurry up. You better not be putting make up now. (Pounding on the door)

Nell: Can’t a girl brush her teeth? Anyway I have to take a shower, so wait. (She says while brushing her teeth)

Loren: You much have something crawling up your -—- (Looking angry but alarmed)

Antoinette: --- Don’t go there! You know how she gets! (Whispering)

Loren: Thanks, Antoinette. (Calming down)

Antoinette: When she goes off, she never comes down… It’s like she’s on speed. (Laughing low with Loren)

Loren: You are so right. (Speaking lower)

Back to Margaret, Kerry, and Heather to see what was their reword.

Margaret: Your reword ladies are going shopping with me. (Smiling and leading them outside)

Kerry: Wow. (Nearly jumping into the air)

Heather: Everyone will be jealous of us. (Smiling)

Margaret: Lets go! (Pointing to the car and running towards it)

Kerry and Heather run after.

Heather: Your pretty fast Margaret. (Looking amazed)

Margaret: Well, you know how it is… (Taking some hare out of her face)

Kerry: What are you, like 32? (Looking puzzled)

Margaret: What. No honey, I’m 24. I look that old? (Has a blank face on)

Kerry: Uh… No? (Hoping she doesn’t get in trouble)

Margaret: Oh… Never mind. (Smiling) Get in the car.

Heather: You almost got it Kerry. (Whispering)

Kerry: Got what? (Looking confused)

Margaret: What are you ladies whispering about? (Taking a short glance at them)

Heather: Nothing. (Looking afraid but relieved that she didn’t know what they were talking about)

Margaret: Here we are. The greatest mall in town, Flower-Bomb.

Kerry: This mall is huge. (With amazement)

Margaret: Lets go in. (Walking in the mall) Let’s go to the kids section. (Going on the escalator)

Heather: Do you think this would look right on me, Kerry? (Grabbing Levi’s jeans)

Kerry: Yeah, they look cool. (Looking at them with dreamy eyes) Would this look right on me? (Holding a black shirt up)

Heather: Yeah. (Smiling)

Margaret: What do you think of this girls? (Holding up a suit)

Heather: It looks great. (Wow expression)

Kerry: I agree but it’s more, classy. (Raising her right eyebrow)

Margaret: Okay… I have a cool idea. We all have an hour to shop for shoes, hats, and outdoor wear. When that hour is up meet me in front of the dressing room, so we can have a modeling competition. (Looking serious) We can’t shop together and the cloths that you model have to be the ones you will be buying. Don’t worry girls there’s only one ladies dressing room on this floor. Just don’t get lost in it. (Raising her eyebrows)

Heather: I agree. (Smiling)

Kerry: Let’s ride. (Looking serious)

Margaret: Start now. (Walking quickly to go to the adult’s section)

Back to the faster home.

Loren: Hurry up, Nell! (Screaming)

Nell: I’m in the shower! (Laughing)

Loren: She is really getting on my nerves. (About to punch the door)

Antoinette: I hope you don’t do what I think you are. She feeds off of people’s anger. That’s why she was just laughing. (Looking concerned)

Loren: You know a lot about her. I wonder why? (Pulling her hair back)

Antoinette: See, I watch her all the times when she’s talking to people. I see that she thinks she’s higher than everyone and more superior, but in fact she’s just a dumb broad. (Looking her in the eyes)

Loren: Wow. I guess quiet is better. (Looking clueless) It’s about time your out. (Nell getting out of the bathroom)

Nell: Shut up… (Waving her hand in Loren’s face)

Loren: Whatever… (Ignoring what she did)

Antoinette: Nice, move… (She whispered to Loren)

Loren: I’ll be out in 30 minutes. (Closing the bathroom door)

Antoinette rests on her bed. Then back to the mall.

Margaret: Let me check my watch. Wow. There’s only 5 minutes left. I have to go to the Girl’s fitting room now. (She hurried)

Heather: There’s two minutes left! (Whispered and walked quickly towards the Girls dressing room)

Kerry: I have a minute? (Running to the Girls dressing room)

Margaret: Here comes Heather, not so far from her Kerry. (She whispered to herself) As you can see Heather your second and Kerry, your third. This is the order we will start the competition. (Going in to change)

Kerry: I wonder what she’s going to wear. (Looking at Heather)

Heather: I really don’t know but it’s going to be good. Here she comes… (Looking at her)

Margaret: Feast your eyes on this dress. (Strutting down till she gets in front of the ladies)

Heather and Kerry: Wow. (She’s walking back in the dressing room)

Heather: I didn’t think she would look right in a dress. I’ v never seen her in something like that before. (Eyes widened)

Kerry: Wow… (Giggling) Your eyes look like their going to pop out. (Laughing)

Heather: Hey… (Laughing with her)

Kerry: Shh… She coming… (Looking at her)

Margaret: Here I am in a paint suit, with high heal shoes, and a white and black hat. (Walking towards them)

Kerry and Heather: Yeah, Margaret. Strut your stuff. (She said smiling)

Heather: Just don’t hurt yourself. (She said while Margaret was in the fitting room)

Time passes and it is almost Heather’s turn.

Kerry: Now, what grade should we give her? (Looking at Heather)

Heather: I would give her an A+ because she was perfect out here. What would you give Margaret? (Looking at Kerry with suspicious eyes)

Kerry: I would go with what you said, she deserves it especially for wearing those long heals without falling. (Snickering to herself)

Heather: Se we agree. (Waiting for Margaret to walk out)

Margaret: It’s your turn know Heather. Good luck. (Walking up to Kerry) So Kerry, what did I get? (Looking at her smiling)

Kerry: I can’t tell until the show is over. (Blank faced)

Margaret: Good. (Smiling)

Kerry: What? (Looking Confused)

Margaret: Well, I was just testing you. (Putting her hand on Kerry’s shoulder)

Kerry: Here comes Heather. (Turning to see her)

Margaret: Wow. She has a punk rock look. That is so cute. (Smiling the whole time)

Kerry: She looks so cool in those jeans. (Admiring Heather’s cloths while she walks into the fitting room)

Margaret: She changes fast. (Looks amazed as Heather walks out towards them)
That’s an amazing Jean skirt. (Looking at Heather)

Kerry: Yeah, wow. (Admiring the cloths)

Heather’s time is almost out and it is almost Kerry’s turn.

Margaret: It’s almost time for you to go Kerry. (Looking excited)

Kerry: I can’t wait, but first, what grade would you give Heather? (Looking happy and engaged)

Margaret: Well, I would give her an A because the cloths she wore were cool but I was looking forward to see her wearing a hat. (Nodding)

Kerry: I will agree with you because I don’t want to argue with you. (Looking down while Heather comes out)

Heather: Kerry…. Come on down…. (She gave the come signal)

Kerry: I’m the last one and hopefully the best. (Walking into the fitting room)

Heather: You wouldn’t believe how great I felt doing this. (Bunching up her hands in excitement)

Margaret: I know. When I was up there, It was like I was an entertainer. (Smiled) After we will go for Ice cream and then head back to the shelter. (Putting her hands together)
Heather: Here, she comes. (Pointing at her and smiling)

Kerry: Here I am Ms. Kerry Lee (She sang and waved her hands)

Margaret: Do it Madonna style. (Posing)

Heather: See ya. Toots. (Giggling as Kerry walks back into the fitting room)
She’s great.

Margaret: Shh… She’s coming. (Putting her hands in between her thighs)

Kerry: Vogue. Vogue. Vogue. Vogue. (She said every time she posed)

Everyone has an A, they go and purchase the cloths, and then get some Ice cream. They are now on their way home. Now Back to the foster home.

Antoinette: I wonder what happened to Heather and Kerry. (She whispered to her self as she put some cloths on)

Nell: Are you guys done yet? I want to play ball. (Slamming her hands on her bed)

Margaret: We’re back. Wow, I can’t believe you girls aren’t outside yet. (Walking Kerry and Heather to their room, then leaving)

Nell: Where did you brats go? (Looking them up and down)

Kerry: We’re not brats. (She raised her voice)

Nell: Then, kids. (Start laughing)

Kerry: Close enough, you dumb broad. (She said to herself)

Nell: What! (Rising her hands up to her hips)

Kerry: Nothing. (Looking suspicious) Look, do you what to know where we went or what? (Folding the cloths that were in the bag) I guess you’ve figured it out, we went shopping. (Putting the cloths away)

Nell: What? Why? What did you do that was great? (Eyes widening up with anger)

Heather: Well, when Kerry woke up Margaret hadn’t come to our room, so Kerry tried waking everyone up, that she would be pleased. I was the only one who woke up and that how we both were reworded. (Looking at Kerry)

Loren: At least you had a cool afternoon. (Looking at Nell)
Nell: You were the needle up my but. (Looking at her in fury)

Loren: Your so sweet, my beloved roommate. (Smiling)

Nell: Be quiet! (She said in a low tone as if she was going to blow up)

Antoinette: Anyway. Congratulations, I hope you guys had fun. If you and Heather want to play basketball, come outside. Everyone should be there, so hopefully the teams will be even.

Heather: Yeah… I’ll go. I just need to freshen up. (Going to the bathroom)

Kerry: Okay, let’s go. (Walking to the back of the foster home)

Antoinette: First we will do some practice shoots. (Standing at the 3pt. Line) Then shoots like this. (Shoot the ball) Now you try. (Passing the ball to Kerry)

Kerry: Okay, stand at the 3pt. line and shoot. (Then she shoots the ball and it bounces off the rime)

Nell: So, what are you guy—Ow. (Gets hit by the ball while walking in, then holding her head)

Kerry: I’m sorry Nell. (Giggling to herself) Are you okay? (Looking at her)

Nell: I bet your sorry alright. (Walking back in the Foster home)

Kerry: Antoinette, why does she always have to be mad? (Looking at Antoinette)

Antoinette: When she gets embarrassed in front of so many people she feels bad and she takes it out on people who talks to her, I guess. (Looking serious)

Heather: You sure know a lot about her. (Crossing her arms)

Antoinette: I’ve been with her for so long. (Look down to Heather)

Back to Nell and she is heading towards her councilor, Samuel Fern.

Nell: Samuel! (She walked quickly to him)

Samuel: Yes. (Turning around and smiling then his smile turns into concern when he sees Nell) Nell, what’s wrong? (Pointing her to the seat)

Nell: I shouldn’t have had a party at my house. My parents didn’t want me too, but what would I do in the house alone. I guess I was tired of being alone and I felt like having the party. When my parents leave me in the house I would never know when they would come back. They never tell me where there were going. On day the cops came during my party and that is the reason I am here today. (Looking mad) I hate this place and no one treats me with the respect that I deserve. (Starting to cry)

Samuel: Calm down Nell… (Speaking with a soft voice) Listen, have you treated your roommates with respect? (Handing her a napkin)

Nell: Well. When I think about it, this morning I was acting a fool when Loren tried to get me to hurry up and get out the bathroom. When the new girl, Kerry came, I spoke trash about her. (Wiping her tears away)

Samuel: Tell me exactly. What did you say? (Crossing his legs)

Nell: I said that something wasn’t right with her and that she had some mouth on her. (Starting to realize her mistakes) Then I asked Loren and Antoinette what they thought, but they didn’t say anything bad about her.

Samuel: I think you made a brake through. You have just found out that you weren’t respecting your roommates, so they didn’t respect you. I believed that you knew that before I told you. I was able to tell by your face. (Smiling at her) Now go and apologize. (Leading her to the door)

Nell: Thank you Samuel. (She smiled gracefully and going to her room to get Loren to come outside with her)

Loren: I don’t want to go anywhere with you. (Looking mad)

Nell: Look, I will fill you in this dire situation that I am in. You our roommates and I have to talk. (Looking at Loren with her arms crossed)

Loren: Okay. Lets go… (Sighing)

Nell: Hey, Heather, Kerry, and Antoinette can you guys come here a minute. (Loren standing beside her) I’ve been a jerk. I can understand why ya’ll laugh at me and talk when my back is turned. I do it to ya’ll too. I’ve come to apologive for all the crap I’ve to ya’ll through. You can forgive me or not, all that matters is that I feel good now that it’s all in the open. (Turning to Loren) Now… Loren I’m sorry. (Looking down)

Loren: You know how to get a girl mad but… Your forgiven. Get over here. (Holding her arms open to hug Nell)

Kerry: What happened to her. (Looking confused)

Heather: So… Tell us Antoinette. (Everyone looking at her)

Antoinette: Well… She feels as is if weight has been lifted off of her and she has become a new person, she can tell you herself. (Now everyone lookd at Nell)

Nell: Okay? From now on I will have to out talk to Antoinette because I can’t have her speaking for me. To cut to the chase… I just realized what I put ya’ll through.

Antoinette: Girl, it’s about time. (Smiling) Come give us a hug. (Opening her arms)

Nell: I can’t believe you guys forgave me. (Hugging each person at a time)

Next day:

Margaret: Everyone from room #5, come to the conference room for a meeting. (Speaking on the intercom)

Kerry: I wonder what’s in store for us girls? (Walking to the conference room with everyone racing in front of her)

Margaret: I have some news for you guys…good news or bad news? (Turning away not to see everyone’s face)

Nell: I want the bad news; I want to know why you can’t look us in the eyes. (Looking engaged)

Margaret: What about everyone else? (Looking saddened)

Everyone: Bad news… (Synchronizing the words)

Margaret: Well… Then… (Tossing her hair back and hiding her saddened expression) Kerry your mother’s funeral is tomorrow… (Looking at her dead in her eyes) A lot of your friends will be leaving here and you will be close to having a room to yourself or having strangers come in.

Kerry looked to the dirty part of the sealing trying to hold back some tears.

Kerry: What time is the funeral? Who is leaving? (She took a big breath).

Margaret: The funeral starts at 8:00 in the morning and as to who’s leave—-

Nell: It’s me isn’t it? (Close to hading tears)

Loren: It’s me right? (Smiling)

Margaret: Excuse me! As for those who are leaving I will call you and as I call you come up hear. (She spoke softly) Catres, Heather, and Sandy. Come… (She gave them each a gift). Everyone must make you last goodbyes because the catch is that they are leaving today.

Kerru: Bye Catres, Heather, and Sandy. (Starting to tear up)

Everyone got a hug in that room. Kerry pretended to go to the bathroom and went to her room and cried herself to sleep)

Heather: Did anyone see Kerry? (Looking around the meeting room)

Margaret: She’s in the bathroom…. (Looking away from her)

Heather: Kerry… (She walked by the bathroom and noticed Terry sleeping in her room) Terry… (She looked the tears on Terry’s face and whipped them)

Terry: Sniff. (She tuned away)

Heather:!  Oh… (She stands out the door and started to cry and whipped her tears quickly) Terry! (She tickled her and Terry awoke in laughter)

Terry: Do you remember the day when I came here? (She put her head on Heather’s lap)

Heather: Yup… We weren’t allowed to stay up so late then. (lying on the bed with her head looking up towards the top bunk bed)

Terry: I used to talk badly about Nell, but now she’s cool. I’ll miss you. (Looking at her hands)

Heather: It looks to me that you’ll miss your hands… (Laughing) The family that will be joining will really love me and I will be happy with them. I’m not saying that were no cool; I will miss you too. I will give you my phone number when I know it. Bye… (Getting up to hug Terry)

Next day mom’s funeral

When a director or somebody looks at a screenplay, they only look at proffesional ones. They throw away all others. You need to put more termonology. Look up on google or some thing for the proper termonology for screenplays. Other than that, this was a great plot. I am a young indi director, and i myself would pick this piece up. Thank you for the great read.

Review of Version 1 - Read 100%% of the Item

Hi I enjoyed it.  I hope you find the following comments useful:

1)  ”Susan: Those jerks! (Crying,) I quit.”

Would Susan really worry about people whistling at her when she has a job in a strip club? This exposition should be shown to the audience not told to them by the character.  Show (in another scene) how without the money she’s really on the breadline.  The same in “I can’t believe I did that.  She’s going to hate me. A mother shouldn’t hit their child. I think I’ll go to her room and tell her why I’m acting this way. (Starting to weep and drank more then passes out in her room)” – character’s beliefs and situations needn’t be set out in a monologue like this – it can often ring false.

2)  Small thing – would she really get in a car to go three doors down to see her aunt?

3)  You immediately introduce a lot of characters in one go – you might find easier to delineate each character more clearly if you had fewer – maybe 3 or 4 in this type of setting.  Have a look at One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest for a good ensemble piece – lots of people but only a few characters.

5)  there’s a few spelling errors you need to look out for – sealing instead of ceiling and so on…

Looking forward to seeing how it develops.  Good luck. N
