Children's / Jay and Joy (Part 1)

-Animal Shelter
“Are you certain this is the pet you want?” Mom asked skeptically. “I thought I understood that you wanted a little dog.”

Joy couldn’t explain it. There was just something about the little cat that struck a chord in her heart. She looked into the deep black eyes of the white cat.

Mom was still unsure. She spoke to the animal’s foster mom Tina for the rescue group.

“What can you tell us about this cat?” She asked as Joy continued to interact with the cat.

“This little cat is about one year old. His name is Jay. Jay was found in the bushes. He is quite young when he was found. Maybe he just got lost. Some one sent him to the fairyland animal shelter. He was checked and has no known health problems. He is very lovely though sometimes appear a little naughty.” Tina paused a minute and extended her hand to rub the cat’s neck.

Then she talked to the cat, “You are just a wonderful creature, a little sponge trying to soak up every bit of attention that you can!”

“Meow-” The little cat happily responded her.

Joy was attracted and put both her hands on Jay. As she gently rubbed him, Jay happily responded her with “Meow-meow-“ too.

“Mom” Pleaded Joy, “Please, mom! I know Jay is the pet I want to rescue. It’s like I’ve been waiting all my life to find him.”

“All right. If you are absolutely sure, he can come home with us on a trial basis.” Mom said.

“Did you hear that, Jay?” asked Joy. “You are coming home with me! You will have a sweet home. You will never be on street alone and never need to worry about your future again!”

- Pet Mart
In the way home, Mom stopped the car at a pet mart. She told Joy,
“Let’s do some shopping. We have to take care of this little thing, don’t we?”
“His name is Jay, Mom.” Joy jumped out the car and took Jay out. “We need to buy a lot of stuff for him. We need to make him a home.”
Joy did not know there were so many goods for a cat in the pet mart. After all, this is her first time to shop for a pet. Mom picked a bed, some cat food, a litter box and a water fountain. That ended the shopping.
Coming home, Joy could not wait to show Dad her new pet. Mom and Dad decided to make the den on the second floor the special area for Jay. Joy’s request to put Jay in her bedroom was denied. But the den was right next to Joy’s bedroom. Joy felt that’s ok.
“Joy, do you want to help setting up the room for Jay?” Mom asked.
“I will be very happy to do that!” Joy answered. She landed Jay down to the floor. She had held him all the time since home. She talked to Jay,
“Jay, you will stay here watching me. I will set up the room for you.”
Mom put the water fountain along one wall of the den. Joy put the litter box on the other wall.
Joy picked up the cat bed. It felt so soft and comfortable. Joy put it in the middle of the den. She picked up Jay and put him on the bed and talked to him,
“Jay, this is your bed. It is so warm and snug. It is just right for you to take a nap.”

Jay shaked his tail and made a meow.

- Joy’s Home
Jay mumbling to himself when he was soaking in water and bubbles.
“It’s so cruel to soak me in water. I hate rainy days. Rain wet my fur and made me cold and sick. I don’t like being soaked in water. For no good reason I was chosen for the water torture. This time however it included a burning foamy chemical called “shampoo.”  What sick minds could invent such a liquid? It panic me.” In panic, Jay scratched the bubbles with his paws.

“Oh—“ Mom cried. She drew her left hand back. It was scratched and started to bleed.

Joy was shocked. She was so afraid that mom would send Jay back to the animal shelter. This was Jay’s first day home on his probation. She looked at mom and wanted to beg her.

Mom’s voice waked her. “Joy, I need your help. Let’s quickly flush the cat and I will dry him with a big towel. Then I can handle the scratch he gave me.”

“Yes, Mom!” Joy answered.
Joy did all her best to help mom finishing Jay’s bath and also helped mom to wrap her hand. At the same time, she prayed that mom would not send Jay away. It’s a long wait from the afternoon to the dinner time.

When everyone was sitting at the dinner table, Mom said,
“We should learn more about cat. Look, this is the first time for us to raise a little animal.”
Joy dare to ask, “Mom, would you send Jay away because his bad behavior?”
“Joy, do you want me to send him away?” Mom asked Joy back.
Joy answered, “No, I think he was just nervous. Once he gets familiar with our home and us, he will be a good boy. I believe.”
Then Mom said, “Ok. Let’s vote. Who wants to send Jay away?”

No one.

That was the first day for Jay on his probation.
