Short Story / Angel of Beauty

Step. . . one. . . two. . . spin. . . kick! Step. . . spin. . . and land it in a pose.  ”You’re up Kenji!” I shouted over the loud music playing.  Kenji and I were in a dance off-I had him beat no problem.  Kenji went into a version of the robot. “Is that all you gott’o Mr. Roboto?” I laughed.  I was off to new people.  I made my way down the aisle of tan chairs aligned into rows of nine chairs.  In the second row I found my bag.  I went to get my pen and paper to write when a chill ran up my neck.  I ignored it.  I sat in the corner of the room.  I wrote the word “Angel” on a piece of paper.  This is what I wanted to title my next piece.  I had no ideas on the topic however.

As I put the pen down, and crumpled the paper into a ball, the doors to the sanctuary opened.  I saw two teenage girls enter.  One was normal, the other however, had a back brace.  Meghan was her name.

She sat in the fifth row. There was something about this girl that I was drawn to.  I went to her, “Are you new?”  What a stupid question.  I knew she had never been to youth group before.  So it was obvious she was new.

“Yes.” She answered, without turning to look at me.  We talked until youth group began.

Halfway through, the youth pastor called Meghan up to be prayed for.  She wanted a healing.  I immediately hurried right alongside her.  We started to pray.  My spirit felt alive as it started to lift right out of the room.  I felt Meghan’s hand still holding mine.

I was suddenly in the back of an ambulance.  The paramedics were frantic trying to save a girl.  I saw her there.  Her eyes were closed, yet i knew who it was.  The heart monitor was a straight line, a low beep continued under the whole chaos.  I touched her face.  She opened her mouth and a faint breath escaped-a movement on the monitor.  I closed my eyes and prayed that she would make it.  I felt my body get lighter.  I opened my eyes to see an angel ascend from within the girl.  The angel carried me through the ambulance and up into the heavens.  She let me down in a field.  She began to speak in a voice like the calm flow of a small creek.

“My friend.  You must not be afraid.”  She held my hand.

“I’m not.”  I said somewhat confused.

“I will let you know that the girl you saw in the ambulance will wake in the morning.  She’s a brave one.” The angel smiled.

“How so?”  I asked eager to hear about the girl.

“She will live through months of pain only because she wants to live.  She could have easily passed on with me to the Heaven, but chose to live life as an angel.  To heal on Earth, to learn, and to love.”

“But why would God let her get hurt?”

“You see young boy,  our God does not let his children get hurt.  He only gives us pains we can handle.  And he helps us through those which we cannot.  Harm and pain come no matter where you are, but it’s the power within us that determines whether or not we want to get through it.”

“But who are you?  How do you fit into this?” i asked.

The angel showed me a flower that appeared but had yet to bloom.

“Do you see that flower?” I nodded. “Notice how it has no true beauty outside, but when I touch it,” she kissed the flower.  ”it blooms and becomes beautiful.” The flower opened up and was the most beautiful lavender rose I had ever seen.  I looked at the angel and couldn’t help smiling.  ”Close your eyes.” she said.  She kissed my cheek and i felt a tingle on my neck.

I opened my eyes and I  was back in the sanctuary, Meghan still holding onto my hands.  I looked over her shoulder to see the angel of beauty.  She kissed Meghan and disappeared.
