Short Story / If the King of Kings could make a speech.
“Good evening viewers this is CNN reporting from the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem on this most auspicious occasion.
Today, after a silence of some 2000 years the King of Kings is going to appear in public and address not just the nation but the entire world.
I have with me Minister for the interior, Rueben Joseph.”
“Mr Joseph this promises to be a truly amazing event, how did it come about?”
“Good morning Mr Springer, this is certainly the most unusual event. The first we knew of it was a message that appeared on the Wailing wall itself. Initially we suspected some students of playing tricks. We put the writings down to tasteless graffiti but when we tried to remove them they reappeared over night and no matter how many cctv cameras or guards we posted, the writing would be back by morning.”
“So Mr Joseph for centuries people have speculated on the nationality of God, tell us what language the writings turned out to be.”
“Ah now that is interesting. If an Israeli reads the message it is in Hebrew. If a Frenchman reads it then to him it is in French.”
“And the message itself?” asked Springer.
“Somewhat cryptic I’m afraid. It reads, “Coming before coming and gives today’s date 9am.”
“Thank you Mr Joseph. I am now joined by the chief Rabbi of Israel and by one of the world’s leading scientists Professor Romanov of the Russian Federation.
First Professor, given that this is not some elaborate hoax, what do expect to hear today?”
“Mr Springer the hoax element should not be ruled out just yet but if indeed there is a divine creator then he comes at a time when we are indeed at a crossroads in history. Over the next century we have a unique set of dangers and opportunities ahead of us.
The rise of rogue nations armed with atomic weapons is pushing us inextricably towards world government. This will not be democratic in nature. The international community will by definition impose its will on any nation which refuses to join. The mere refusal being seen as an admission of something to hide.
Secondly climate change and rising sea levels due to global warming requires us to take full control of the world’s economies. Yesterday the West polluted the globe, today the East and tomorrow the South. This cannot continue and the imposition of our will on these developing nations will cause many a conflict.”
“But Professor you mentioned an even more radical idea to me earlier, would you share that with our viewers?”
To some this idea may seem as far fetched as the idea of God coming to give a speech but the new generation of orbital telescopes can identify earth like planets orbiting several stars in our neighbourhood. It may not be too long before we discover that we really are not alone. Perhaps this King of Kings is just some local potentate come to make his claim for the throne of the Earth.”
Springer again, “Rabbi, tell us how you see this event. Do you anticipate the return of Jesus or perhaps Moses?”
“Humph, certainly not the Nazarene but perhaps the Prophet Elijah, he you must remember was taken up to heaven and did not pass through death.”
“So you do not expect to see God himself?”
“No, definitely not for it is written, no man shall see God and live.”
Just then there was an enormous thunderclap which made the very ground tremble. The trees around the square shook like grass in the breeze and the eyes of all were blinded by a great light.
As Springer’s eyes started to clear he became aware of a small boy standing on the podium erected beneath the wall. He seemed about ten years old and appeared a little bemused by the height of the microphones standing in front of him. He looked around and caught the eye of a sound man who was kneeling at the front of the stage. The soundman got up from his tape recorder and offered his aluminium flight case to the boy. The young lad gratefully took the case and used it to stand on so that he was level with the battery of mikes.
Clearing his throat he addressed the crowd and the world beyond them, his high voice drifting across the square. “My Father says this, “You have been weighed in the balance and found wanting. Time is short. Love one another as I have loved you.”
Again the thunder, again the light and he was gone.
