Journalism / Michelle Tumes Online Interview
Scott Buren: Hi Michelle Tumes, how are you? And thank you very much for agreeing to do this Interview
Michelle Tumes: It is my pleasure to talk to you!
Scott: Thank you I feel the same. I have heard all the songs on your new cd and let me tell you, if I can get a law passed that would allow human beings to marry Comact Discs, this new cd would be the one. (laughs)
Michelle: you are too kind!!
Scott: Thank you I try. In all seriousness Michelle I love the new cd and now finally my first question:
Michelle: go ahead!
Scott: I’m sure all the songs on the new album are very special to you, but do you personally have some favorites on the album that you might hold a little closer to your heart?
Michelle: I think so, even though all the songs have a special place on the album. Probably “Hold On To Jesus” because I wrote that when I was in high school
Scott: Awesome I love that song by the way (smile)
Michelle: Thanks
Scott: Your welcome. This new album as well as your previous albums are all very beautiful, what inspires you to write and sing music?
Michelle: It is only through my relationship with God and I feel that He reveals Himself through things that He has created and circumstances here on earth that point to Heaven. This is my real inspiration.
Scott : Amen, what is your all time favorite song, it don’t have to be one of your own but just in general, do you have a favorite song?
Michelle : I am so sorry, but to narrow it down, that is just too difficult. There are so many beautiful songs and fantastic pieces of music.
Scott: Thats true and you dont have to be sorry.. its not like i’m going to give you a time out in a corner (laughs)
Michelle: ha ha!
Scott: During the making of this new album, what have been some of the highlights?
Michelle: I think the highlight was going to Prague to record the strings, even though it was scary, it was a magnificent experience.
Scott: Oh yeah, thats way cool. Michelle, It’s obvious God speaks through your music to encourage others, but I was wondering if you have ever encouraged yourself in the process. What I mean by that is have you ever stopped and just listened to what your saying to others and then you yourself get encouraged by it?
Michelle: That is a good question. I feel that I am being ministered to when I sing in front of people. This is because it is only through God’s strength that I can share songs with other people; it is almost like we are all worshipping together and that blesses me.
Scott: Amen thats true, sometimes the word God gives us to give others is not only for others but for ourselves as well
Michelle: I agree!
Scott :How long have you been a Christian?
Michelle: A long time, since I was 4 years old.
Scott: Wow 4 years old, thats awesome. Do you have a favorite Bible Verse?
Michelle: It is probably a verse that my Papa taught me. Neh:8;10 For the joy of the Lord is your strength.
Scott: Amen I find that to be very true in my own life.. even when life is hard the joy of the Lord keeps me goin
Michelle: That is so true
Scott: Your song Hold On To Jesus is beautiful. Your website tells us that you wrote that song when you were 17 years old. What made you deside to finally put it out there?
Michelle: I think it is one of those songs that slipped through the cracks every time I made an album. It is such a simple song and I think there is a right time for everything. I always play it at concerts, and people ask if I have recorded it, so I decided to put it on the album.
Scott: Thank you for listening to them because I love that song so much!
Michelle: Thank you!
Scott: Your welcome, If you can look back on everything you have gone through in life and i’m sure like most people you have had your share of bumpy roads as well as the joys we find in life, but what in life brings you the most Joy the most happiness, what keeps you strong and gives you that drive to carry on?
Michelle: Yes, I have gone through some bumpy times and really the hope that I find in Christ keeps me going. It makes me want to face the next day no matter what I am going through
Scott: Amen! There is a Ray Boltz song that says no matter what tomorrow brings or what it has in store, I know I will praise the Lord.. Good answer
Michelle: This is true
Scott: It Sho is! How would you describe your personality and your charactor?
Michelle: I feel that I am an introverted extrovert! Even though my music can be very serious, I love to have fun and love the outdoors. Unfortunately I am rather messy and don’t dress up very much. I cannot multi-task; I can only stick to one or two things at a time.
Scott: you sound like me lol
Michelle: lol then we are alike!
Scott: Amen Like minded messy people woohoo! Lets talk about food, my stomach suggested that actually (laughs) do you have an all time favorite meal?
Michelle: Unfortunately no; it really depends on the state of hunger. I love sweet things and my favourite dessert would be white on white cake!
Scott: Yummmy! Who would we find in your cd player right now?
Michelle: Since I have been writing and recording music for so long, I have had a little break. Although the last things were Christmas music and the new Josh Groban CD
Scott: Josh is awesome isn’t he?
Michelle: Sure is
Scott: Michelle, lets say there is somebody out there reading this right now and I know that there will be. And lets say they are hurting from whatever it is thats causing them to hurt, what would you tell that person?
Michelle: I would say to (if they are lonely) to find a quiet place and just pray and cry out to God for help. Also, spend some time in silence so God can speak to your heart. I wouldn’t leave this place until I felt a peace no matter what the circumstance. God can give us strength. If you have the opportunity to pray with a friend, I would do this also.
Scott: Thank you Michelle. If you can do anything over with the life you lived, would you? And what would it be?
Michelle: Oh, so many things, but I wouldn’t have learned the things I’ve learned. I have the tendency to get distracted at times and worry about what people think. This is probably what I would eliminate. However, life is a process of learning and growing in faith I believe.
Scott: Thats very true. Ok I have to ask this question: its obvious you can hang with the pop music but do you like any hard rock or rap music, are you hip with that?
Michelle: Oh that is a difficult one! I like hard rock songs that really strike a cord within, but i can’t think of a specific one right now.
Scott: Yeah those hard rock songs that can actually touch your heart.. those ones we like right?
Michelle: for sure
Scott: Well It looks like we are about done here Michelle, thank you very much for allowing me to interview you, I love your music alot, its very enjoyable and has encouraged me many times. Your a beautiful singer and person inside and out.
Michelle: Thank you so much Scott. You have been a great encouragement to me and I really appreciate you taking the time out to interview me.
Scott: Your welcome
Michelle: God bless you!!
Scott: God Bless you too!

A nice interview. It’s nice to read the thoughts and opinions of one’s favorite artists, and I liked the religious aspect of the piece. Her thoughts on what God gives her through her career. You also give her a more human side by asking her about her favorite CD’s, although I might have dialed back the fawning praise a bit. Saying you would marry her CD was a bit over the top. Otherwise, it’s a solid bit of work.

This was very interesting. I don’t follow Christian music very much, but I still enjoyed learning about Michelle Tumes.
You had a few typos such as comact discs instead of compact discs and it don’t have as opposed to it doesn’t have, but other than that, it all flowed well and I got a good sense of your character as well as that of ms. tumes. oh and also you once spelled the word decide as deside.
Though is is probably not “politically correct” and I personally am supportive of gay marriage, I did find the joke about making a law allowing a person to marry compact discs. that cracked me up.
best of luck and god bless you in your work.
