Young Adult / Haunted House
It’s a haunted house the neighbors said.
One day the family moved, just up and fled.
Without a breeze, the shutters would fling.
In the empty yard, a movement of the swing.
Our family was spread out over three floors.
We couldn’t sleep for the slamming of doors.
Armed with flashlights for a closer look,
All feeling like we were inside a scary book.
Searching from every floor to ceiling,
Looking for an intruding human being.
We began to realize that no one was lurking.
Our blood was pumping and nerves over working.
There was thunder and a lightning bolt.
Fear flew through all of us like a jolt.
Attic floor ahead, two floors below.
We were scared and all turned to go.
Scrambling down the stairs, we fell.
Almost to the door, we caught a smell.
Turning around, we knew what fear meant.
There were flowers that no florist had sent.
On the piano, the keys started to play.
We saw someone in the darkness sway.
It held out its’ arms and started to prance.
Don’t go yet, it’s time to start the dance.
With a twirl of it’s arm and upheld hand,
We heard the sounds of an invisible band.
From nowhere they came, dressed in white.
Ready to dance throughout the night.
Polite they were and asked us to join the fun.
We declined and out the door we did run.
It’s a haunted house the neighbors will say.
One day the family left, just moved away.
