Sci Fi & Fantasy / Faith
He was six thousand years old, and showed every moment.
Not that he looked old, far from it. The shell he wore was young, apparent twentysomething, back ramrod straight, posture stiff.
But he stared right through you. He saw every single flaw and vulnerability and he knew, he knew how small and weak you were, that you were a pathetic worm compared to but a ten thousandth of his life. A single word of rebuke could crush a man’s soul, which is perhaps why he spoke so seldom.
He had/was tens of millions of deep cover moles, legions of bright young people all over the world, doing their job and doing it well, without a single suspicion. Every so often one of them would blow cover, more often than not in some emergency, revealing impossible depths of knowledge in a crisis.
With seven billion people, simple statistics dictated that you probably knew one. One in seven hundred, or six hundred, of five thousand, depending on the estimate. Best friends, asshole bosses, faithful wives, death metal band frontmen, at every single strata of society.
So it couldn’t be inherent. It must be the sheer weight of public opinion, the iron cloak of expectation warping him into an impossibly remote father figure, the figurehead of an entire world.
Yes, he had good reason to be old.

I like this description though it doesn’t cover how he ‘is’ all these people.
Near the end, maybe. “The variety was endless, they / he were present at every single strata of society.”
Is it God I wonder? Or the Devil? And does he walk about amongst us so that he can be seen (making sense of the first line?)
