De Soto
Hernando De Soto was one of the first explorers to ever travel throughout America, and through parts of Missouri. De Soto, born in Spain in 1497 grew to be one of histories most famous early explorers and to this day is remembered for his contributions to establish land in America. De Soto had some very interest facts about him, compared to most early explorers. For one, when he died, the others were afraid they would be attacked by wild Indians, so they wrapped his body in shroud, filled it with sand, and threw him in the river!
Hernando De Soto’s route was very different from Marquette‘s, Jolliets‘s, and La Salle’s (Three other explorers who are also very famous for exploring early America, they are all thee summarized in my other papers.) De Soto instead of traveling from the north through America and reaching the south, did things a little differently. De Soto landed in florida and traveled his way up north getting into parts of Missouri before turning back. Although he didn’t travel the entire country like other explorers, he did map Florida and many other locations that were never reached by the other explorers.
Summing up everything, De Soto was one of the first French explorers, and he also explored places many did not. He will always be remembered in Missouri’s history for being one of the first to ever travel our country.

French Summary

French In The Louisiana Territory
The French started exploring as early as the 1700’s alongside Spain, and other European countries. It seemed like the Louisiana territory, as well as most of America were being explored by other countries who were known to have three things they believed and looked for in this new country. The French were one of the biggest countries who explored the new world, and you can tell by today that a lot of America is brought up by French influence.
Many famous French explores traveled America, and many of them traveled down the Mississippi and through out the Louisiana Territory. Three French explorers were Marquette, Joliet, and Le Salle. Marquette and Joliet actually went down the Mississippi together and realized that it empty out into the Gulf Of Mexico. And Le Salle traveled along the great lakes to the upper area of the Mississippi, then he also traveled along the Mississippi with a crew. Although he met his end when he was murdered by his backstabbing crew when he got lost in Texas. These are just a few examples of French explores and there interaction with the Louisiana territory.
The French have always had an impact on the Louisiana territory and its to hard to summarize them with such short space. You could write for pages about each explorer, and each king! But its hard to deny that the French didn’t play an important role in shaping America to the way it is today!

La Salle
La Salle was born in France in the 1600’s and explored across the great lakes to the upper area of the Mississippi. He left on January of 1682 to claim land, natural resources, and inhabitants for his king. The funny thing about La Salle was that he was murdered by his mutinous crew after getting lost and ending up instead of texas.
La Salle left from Wisconsin, and went down the Mississippi in a very similar route to Marquette and Joliet, and continued until he reached the Gulf of Mexico. He met plenty of strange Indians on his way, and he wrote all about them in a journal that was found many years later. After traveling for over half a year, it was obvious his crew was getting restless of following a man who they thought was smug, and to confident. But never the less they pushed on until they reached the Gulf Of Mexico.
Once they turned around, positions switched and La Salle was left to struggle for control over his crew. It was clear to everybody that he was losing it, and they finally murdered him and left him in Texas, as the rest of the crew traveled back up the Mississippi towards the campsite which was across the country. La Salle was known for exploring the upper lakes which were always thought to connect to the ocean, and he was the first one to clarify whether that was true or not.

Marquette and Joliet
Marquette and Joliet were the first explorers to ever map the northern part of the Mississippi river, and parts up near Canada. Marquette and Joliet had a long journey, that brought them across the new country and back to where they started from. They traveled for over a year to discover and explorer many different parts of each state in the Midwest and also make a very interesting discover.
Marquette and Joliet left near Green Bay, Wisconsin and traveled down the Missouri River until it came into contact with the Mississippi River. Marquette and Joliet’s goal was to spread religion, seeing as how they were both missionaries. They spread there religion up and down the Mississippi to local Indians, hoping that they would grasp the concept of Christianity!
Going down the Mississippi river, Marquette and Joliet made a very surprising discovery. They had always thought that the Mississippi had drained into the ocean, but they were surprised when they found out that the Mississippi actually drained into the Gulf of Mexico. This was one of the biggest discoveries they made, and they definitely will go down in history for it.
