Poetry / 4:37 AM
My tendency to wake up
in the middle of the night strikes again
With the blinds up and the window open
I lay in bed like a faithful dog,
staring at street lights resembling
the star that led Joseph and Mary
to the manger
I watch signals slow, stop and go
pass without traffic
The sign continually says don’t walk
with a steady red hand,
like me it does not blink
I see leaves rustle without sound
and pitch black sleep far and wide
I think of you
And decide to take two chewable melatonin,
then swallow one unisom via Strawberry lime soda
A car turns the corner
on Belleview, a one way street
and its going the wrong way
too early, too late
to change its path
until un-coming traffic plays the horn section
of a disastrous ensemble
Red, walk
Green, don’t walk
The wind pushes the breeze
and I finally hear
the leaves
Sleep
Baby
Sleep
they say to me
While you
remain
out of reach
