Fishing for fishes

Nestled in the foothills of the fabulous Smokey Mountains is the tiny town of perfect Tennessee.  Perfect is so small that it does not even exist on any maps.  However, perfect is famous for it’s “Pefect’s Perfect Porches”, and there is one man responsible for painting all of them.  Peter Painter painted Perfect’s, and everyone loved them.  In fact people bought Postcard’s of Perfect’s Perfect Porches and sent them all over the world.  Peter Painter was very happy that people loved his work.  You see, Peter Painter was so shy that he started to shake sometimes when he talked to people, and the words never quite came out right.  He was very nice, and he loved people very much, but he had no friends because he was too shy.  Well, after many years Peter had painted all of Perfect’s porches, and no one needed him to paint anymore.  So, Peter lived quietly ny himself with his pet mouse Moose.  Then, one day Peter was driving home from the grocery store when he passed by Finley Fisher’s house  Finley Fisher’s porch was the first porch that Peter painted.  That was a long time ago though, and the paint was now chipped and peeling.  So, Peter decided to stop and knock on the door of Finley and Francis Fisher.  Peter stuck his hands in his pockets to keep them from shaking.as Finley opened the door

“Oh, hi Peter.”  Finley said.

“Hi Finley.”  Peter muttered.”  I couldn’t help but notice your porch, and I was wondering if I could paint it?”  Finley thought that this was a fabulous ideabecause his wife Francis had gone to visit her sister and wouldn’t be home until next week.  She would be so happy to see the new paint.

“That would be great”  Finley said, “Can you start tomorrow?”

“Sure”  Peter said, and went home so happy that he even dreamed about painting the Fisher’s Porch.  The next morning he knocked on the Fisher’s door before the sun was even up, but no one answered.  So, he knocked again.  Still no answer.  ”Well”  Peter thought.  ”It is early.  Finley must still be asleep.”  So, Peter set to work.  About 11am Finley pulled his car into the garage and went straight into the house because he didn’t want to bother Peter while he was working.  Shortly after lunch Peter looked through the window and saw Finley sitting on the couch, eating a donut and drinking lemonade.  Peter really wanted to make a new friend so he knocked on the door, sticking his hands in his pockets as Finley answered.

“I was wondering if you wanted to learn how to paint.  That way you can paint the porch yourself next time.”

“I’d like that”  Finley said, knowing that Francis would love that he had helped paint the porch  So, they spent all afternoonwith Peter teaching Finley to paint, and how to keep the paint looking nice.  That night, Peter went home very happy.  The next morning Peter knocked on Finley’s door, but again no answer.  ”where could he be?”  Peter wondered, as he started to work.  Later that morning Finley drove into the garage and went right inside.  This time, he came out a few minutes later with two donuts and two glasses of Lemonade.  After the donuts and lemonade, they spent the day painting and talking.  It turns out that Finley is a fabulous fisherman, and Peter loves fishsticks.  So, the two of them spent the rest of the week together.  However, they soon finished the porch, but neither one of them wanted Peter to leave.  So, they decided that next week Finley would teach Peter to fish since Peter had taught Finley to paint.  Peter didn’t know how to fish, but he sure loved fishsticks.  So, Peter was very excited all weekend.  The next week Peter and Finley met at Lake Perfect every morning at 4am to fish, and Peter leanred all sorts of new things.  Waiting for a fish to bite is like watching paint dry, which Peter is really good at.  One day Finley told his best friend Corey Cooker about all the time that he was spending with Peter.

“Gee”  Corey thought.  ”I wish that I could paint.”  Corey looked at his porch and it looked good because Peter had just painted it the year before.  Then he looked at his back deck and realized that it had never been painted.  So, he called Peter Painter and asked for his help.  Peter was more than happy to help.  The next day Peter was teaching Corey Cooker how to paint when they stopped for lunch and Corey sauteed salmon.  It turns out, that Corey Cooker is a chef.  Peter was learning alot about fish, but he still didn’t know how to cook it properly.  So, everyday Peter would teach Corey to paint, and at night Corey would teach Peter to cook.  Pretty soon, everyone in Perfect wanted to know how to paint, and Peter’s phone began to ring off the hook.  He realized that it would take forever to teach everyone.  So, he asked his new friends for help.  Every morning, they would go out to Lake Perfect to fishand then they would go to a different house and teach.  The only thing that they asked was that the person they taught teach someone else.  Pretty soon, Peter Painter had lots of friends.  But, to this very day Peter Painter, Finley Fisher, and Corey Cooker get together, just the three of them, paint porches, fish for fish and sautee salmon.  Now that is a beautiful friendship.

I like it. It’s cute. Also, beccause it’s a children’s story, I read it to my 4 year old nephew and he thought it was very entertaining.  There are few errors, but I’m pretty sure there more typos then grammatical ones.  I like the use of alliteration and that the story has a clear moral.

I love this piece because I think my daughter would enjoy reading it. I think you have a voice for kids and your ability to tell a story is very strong. I like the way how the story unfolds itself and how the characters are developed. I loce the backdrop of the story.
