Short Story / The Show Must Go On

Orange lights lit up the panel as Jared hit the switch on the amp to turn it on, signifying he was ready to start the show. A quick glance led his focus towards Matt who was peering out at the crowd. Hundreds squeezed into the small venue and it was almost impossible to count the heads of the awaiting fans. Taking a deep breath, Matt gripped the microphone tighter in his hands and welcomed the crowd. There response was quick and unexpected as there screams shook the venue and caused a smile to spread across the band members faces. Mark, with his drumsticks in hand, started a steady beat with his bass drum. This was the signal that the show was about ready to begin, and all eyes were fixated on the musicians under the bright lights of the stage.
The chatter stopped in the crowd as the beat began to pick up, faster and faster. Matt moved back and forth with the beat, almost unaware to what was going on around him. Moving in perfect unison, Jared plucked a few strings from his guitar, creating a melody that went along with the beat of the drum. The crowd’s anticipation grew, and they began to clap along with both the beat from the drum, and the melody pouring from the notes Jared played. Suddenly, both Jared and Mark stopped. A silence filled the air, and it seemed as if time stood still for only a moment. The silence was broke as Mark crashed down on his symbols, four times to start the first opening breakdown.
The music came together all at once, like a lightning strike upon the crowd. With the mic to his mouth, Matt screamed the words he had so many times before. Moving with the rhythm, Jared teased the crowd with each note he played. The first song came to a close, and the lights dimmed on the band. Only one light shinned down upon Jared, and he began to play a slow melody, plucking each chord softly with his fingertips. His voice echoed through the venue, and the crowd moved as one. Back and forth, slamming against the stage like a wave, the hundreds of fans rocked to the music and sang along to each lyric.
