I’m a pretty new writer. I tend to focus my efforts in the horror genre but I dabble in poetry as well.
Professionally, I am a college student majoring in Molecular Biology. Someday, I’ll finally have my degree but not before they name a hall after me, damn it. :-)
I’m always happy to review a piece or to receive good, solid advice on one that I’ve written. There’s nothing quite like having the opportunity to see the creative processes at work no matter which side of the story you’re on. :-)

The sweet, smoky smell of cheap cigars and even cheaper liquor wafted Kurt as he stepped past the aged wooden batwing doors that seemed to stand guard like ancient sentries. Looking around, Kurt scanned the room noting possible escape routes. The doors, through which, he’d just entered, a window off to his right, and another door toward the back of the room. You couldn’t be too careful in a place like this. Trouble was Kurt’s normal companion but this place seemed to have an energy for causi...

“It’s all about the pain…” those words were the words stenciled on the wall in a bright red paint that threatened to burn its image into your retinas even though it was already burnt into your soul. Those letters loomed behind the man standing before Ryan Lewis. Ryan, a man of only 28, with brown hair cut into a neat crew cut and ice blue eyes, had been training in this gym for nearly ten years now. Its cracked ceiling, cardboard covered floors, and three small windows had seen his first tak...

Aztec Mist Two hundred and thirty-six messages. Unbelievable. It had been only twelve hours since Martin had checked his email and now his inbox was awash in emails with taglines such as “Claim your free big screen TV”, “Two DVD’s for the price of one” And a handful of “adult” titles. Such was the price paid for the convenience of instantaneous communications. “Always somebody lookin’ to make a buck,” he thought as he scanned through the list, weeding out the useless emails from the ones tha...

Overall, I thought this exerpt was a good read. It was well set up, I got the distinct feeling of someone who was stuck in a bad place. A person who knew it was going to happen someday, didn't necessarily think that today was going to be the day but he'll take it. He's not resigned to his fate and we don't get an inkling that he might be anywhere throughout the excerpt. (Nice job working the continuity there. It might have been easy to let a little remorse snake in there.) Obviously the char...
Jay, I just wanted to take a minute and say thanks. Taking the time to write this, no doubt, took time away from other, more productive, things you could be doing. I found this both tremendously honest and helpful. As a relatively new writer, I've noticed how easily one can get immersed in a situation where they could be doing an exceptional job of writing a crappy piece and never know it. It is because of people who take the time to write stuff like the article above that new writers, like m...
I really thought this story was well done. Your use of description and dialogue are truly amazing. My favorite bit of description was " The sidewalk was cold and gray underneath us, but the city was beautiful in the afternoon light." While it is kind of vague, I love the effect that it has in creating contrast and making the city seem just a little brighter in my imagination. I really think that it was your use of dialogue that really helps to seal the deal and create a real character in my ...
I thought this piece was pretty well done. I enjoyed it even though it is definately not my usual genre. I loved the flow of the story. It is because of the flow of the story that I can feel the nervous/excitement/arousal that the character must be feeling. Perhaps the best example is the line " Maybe I should tell Belle. Get her advice. Maybe not. I can picture in my head how she would recoil in horror when I tell her of the criminal acts me and Daniel performed last night." The series of s...
