Non-fiction / The Power of a Book
I found this piece of writing did encourage my feelings towards reading more of other people's work, and maybe gaining some new insights or motivations. This is useful for someone like me who has been quite narrow in my reading experience. You encourage me to have a more open mind. Your tentative questioning and wondering make it more enticing to explore the various styles, as opposed to being told that this is a wise practice. I noticed just a couple of things I might change. "Joy enfolded h...
I have read the work you are writing of here and I like the way you describe your interpretation of it and how you have used it. I am one of the ones who has stopped the prescribed 3 pages each morning and it is useful to read that you gave yourself a break and was happy to do one page for a while rather than none. I did feel this was your own work here, and not a rehash of Julia Cameron's, so enjoyed your telling of your journey through this process. I especially enjoyed the last paragraph w...
Non-fiction / The Philosopher
I like this. It has a poignancy to it and reveals itself slowly. I like the way you put your words together. Especially "How had we arrived at this place" and "a reproduction of a greater work." I think the power in it is that you comment on the present moment, so that I am able to be in that moment with you as I read. It leaves me wanting to read more of your work and to know more of this story.
Journalism / What is a FLower?
I would like to have heard some more of your thoughts here. This is quite a profound insight and I would love to see you expand on it, I think you would be even more surprised with what you may come up with. You are so right and your nephew with "amazed look on his face" saw more than a thing with a label. I'm sure if you have not added to these thoughts already, you will do.
Non-fiction / Capture
These six words you've chosen show just how powerful a mere six words can be. It's the "some of it" that does it isn't it. It's all we can ever do, capture some of it ... and being overly verbous won't necessarily help us to say more.
The most impactful part of this for me was the last two lines. I think the subject has promise and you are using many words when some short pithy comment which you are obviously capable of might work better. The part of your criteria ... to Amuse / Entertain / Warm a few hearts, was not the intention in this piece I think.
Love it ... an accurate description of the media participation in the chaos that errupts in a 'safe' community after a tragedy. You have illuminated the way the telling of a story can become more compelling than the actual event. In fact that instead of making us more mindful of the impact on victims it can dull the impact. The metaphors of the ignored middle child and the drunk uncle are amusing and yet potently serious. Thank you for 'a good read.'
I like the way you have intertwined your experience of what is around you and your experience of the girl and of yourself at the time. I think the &s and the 'but' are unnecessary and a bit distracting. I love the last four lines especially. I would play with it a little more as it appears you go from outside, to inside, and back outside and it seems to me the clarity suffers.
Short Story / Bloody Hell!
I found this piece very captivating. The way you wonder about the individuals involved and their processes, comment on what is going on before you as you notice it, makes it a very human story. Because I was completely absorbed in your story of something I would normally not be wanting to watch, the ending took me by pleasant surprise. There is nothing I would change except a check on tenses and other technical things.
Poetry / Theosophy
Love it! Especially the 's' sounds which permeate through it giving it smoothe movement. It does have clarity ... more with each reading and the evocative words used mean that each reading brings a new delight for me not noticed at first. Looking for some consructive feedback to imptove on this ... I find none.
