This author is a 52-year-old Christian female with a quiet, gentle spirit who is trying her best not to add to the din of society. My writing can be taken at face value. If you’re looking for a deeply profound lesson in my writing, you’re probably looking too hard. Any wisdom you may garner from my writing is purely unintentional. Rather, it is meant to be a quiet breeze in the heat of your otherwise hectic day.

Short Story / Freddie Fink
Version 5

Slowly and resolutely I coiled my hand into a tight ball, looking forward to letting it rest on the underside of Freddie Fink’s jaw. Freddie Fink was aptly named. Before I knew it, I had let loose with a holler that would make your ears burn just before my fist came in contact with Freddy’s blotchy fat face. He emitted a squeak akin to a trapped mouse, while retreating lickety split down the sidewalk, his legs wobbling below the kneecaps if that’s possible. For about five minutes, I was the m...

Ever since I was a child seated on the throne reading Reader’s Digest, I’ve had a singular goal—to be an adult sitting on the throne reading my own article in RD. At the onset, this may seem like a noble objective and attainable even, except for two minor obstacles (1) Reader’s Digest does not accept unsolicited manuscripts and (2) I’m not in the least bit famous (another apparent requisite of RD writers). That’s not to say I haven’t had my five minutes in the sun. I was once crowned Sweethea...

Dawn came in with a whisper. There was no fanfare, just a gradual exchange of moonlight to sunlight in various shades of grey. But it was enough to awaken my aging eyes and get my bones moving in a vertical direction. I prayed that maybe today would bring much-needed rains to my little town. The grass has withered and faded and brown tufts have long since replaced the lovely emerald canopy that once covered the rich, black Iowa soil. As if on cue, as afternoon approached, out of the grey atmo...

Non-fiction / To My Dear Friend
In reviewing this piece, I found it to give mixed messages. On one hand you start out bashing this friend for his negativity -- you do this quite in depth. You go so far as to say you are only human and can only take so much. It felt like you were pulling back on your friendship with this person. Yet in the end, you've made an about face, lending your support and friendship and telling him what a great guy he is and that you would always be there for hi -- his #1 fan. Clearly, this piece need...
This piece was full of information, however, as a writer, I've heard most of this before. You are a bit redundant when honing in on the fact that there is a story or stories in all of us. This article did, in fact, make me want to discipline myself into writing on a more regular basis. I find myself going for months at a time without inspiration; my writing is dry and unfocused. This article coaxed me into at least trying to write even when I don't have the muse. Thank you for that and keep w...
Flash Fiction / One Sided Conversation
I was very taken with your story. You developed an interesting plot straightaway and carried it through to a terrific ending. The poor little chicks. I felt the horror of the mother's actions. Let's hope our life's lessons won't be as stark as the emu and the brolga. Keep writing.
